Hamilton says she was let go because she had been late while caring for her children. Burger King says the franchise owner ended her employment for “repeated attendance issues,” and that its policy requires more than one team member on every shift. The reporting does not independently establish the franchisee’s reasoning, so both accounts are presented as claims.
What the viral video showed
A customer posted the clip in July 2025 at a Columbia Burger King during a dinner rush. As The Washington Post described it, Hamilton was bagging orders behind the counter while the customer narrated that she was making fries, burgers and chicken sandwiches.

Hamilton later told local station WACH that another employee had quit and no one else was available, so she worked alone and closed the restaurant. She listed dishes, prep, floors, the front counter and the drive-through among the tasks she covered. The Washington Post reported her account that some shifts lasted more than 12 hours. These are Hamilton’s own descriptions; the coverage does not include independent time records. She also said that working understaffed was not a one-time experience.

Both accounts refer to attendance, but they are not the same claim. Hamilton attributes the lateness to childcare. The company names repeated attendance issues without describing their cause. According to the company, termination decisions belong to the franchisee, and the coverage does not show the franchisee’s own explanation beyond that wording.

Burger King’s staffing policy
In a statement quoted by The Independent, Burger King said: “No Team Member should ever be left to run a restaurant alone, even for a short period of time.” The company said its policy requires more than one team member per shift and expressed disappointment that the policy was not followed.
The reporting does not include a franchise policy document or any independent compliance finding. The staffing rule should therefore be attributed to the company’s statement rather than treated as a verified account of conditions at the Columbia location.

Plans Hamilton described
The Washington Post, citing Hamilton’s TikTok, reported that she planned to use the donations for her children, to help her mother with rent, and to start a cleaning business. These were the plans she described at the time. The coverage does not establish whether she went on to start the business.

Restaurant schedules and turnover in context
The Washington Post placed Hamilton’s case within wider restaurant labor conditions, quoting experts who did not examine her situation directly.
Schedules and turnover
Georgetown University associate professor of operations management and business analytics Qiuping Yu said restaurant workers often have little control over their schedules, which complicates childcare. As reported by The Washington Post in 2025, Yu cited annual restaurant turnover averaging 75 to 80 percent, usually higher in fast food. She also said: “In the restaurant industry, 90 percent of workers have schedules that make it hard to balance work and life.” Those figures describe the industry broadly, not Hamilton’s restaurant.

Franchise staffing decisions
Harvard sociology professor Daniel Schneider, as quoted in the same coverage, said franchise agreements generally do not dictate worker counts or pay. That is a general observation about franchising, and it does not establish how staffing was decided at the Columbia location.
Short-notice scheduling
Sociologist Kristen Harknett discussed short-notice scheduling and the care arrangements it can disrupt. Her comments explain the pressures that can affect attendance across the sector, but they are not findings about the reasons in Hamilton’s firing.

What the reporting does not establish
- Hamilton’s current employment status, including whether she is working at Burger King or elsewhere.
- The current GoFundMe total or whether the campaign is still open.
- Whether the cleaning business has launched.
- The franchisee’s own account of the attendance record, beyond the company’s wording.
- Independent time records for the July shift; the hours described are Hamilton’s.
