Nintendo’s Virtual Boy was a 1995 console built around what the company called a “32-bit Virtual Immersion system.” It launched in Japan and the United States that summer, but the available records here do not establish a single verified worldwide lifetime-sales total or prove one definitive reason it struggled. Its brief history is best understood through what Nintendo set out to make, what launch records show, and how the company has made a selection of its games playable on Switch and Switch 2.
What was the Virtual Boy?
The Virtual Boy was a Nintendo game system introduced in 1995. Nintendo’s corporate history describes it as a “32-bit Virtual Immersion system,” a phrase that captures the company’s distinctive framing but does not, by itself, explain the hardware or its performance. Nintendo’s timeline places the system among the company’s 1995 activity, but offers little detail about the product or its commercial fate. Nintendo’s corporate history is therefore useful for dating and framing the machine, not for a full account of its technology or reception.
When did it launch, and what did it cost?
Planet Virtual Boy’s release database records separate Japanese and U.S. launch entries. These are specialist database records, rather than a complete primary-source chronology.
| Region | Recorded release date | Recorded MSRP | Database-recorded sales |
|---|---|---|---|
| Japan | July 21, 1995 | ¥15,000 | 140,000 units |
| United States | August 21, 1995 | $179.95 | 630,000 units |
The figures and dates in this table are attributed to Planet Virtual Boy’s hardware and release database, accessed in 2026; the page does not independently specify when the underlying sales statistics were compiled. The entries should not be added together and presented as a definitive worldwide lifetime total. Nintendo’s corporate history does not provide a global Virtual Boy sales figure.

Why did the Virtual Boy fail?
The evidence available here does not support a single, definitive explanation. Nintendo’s historical timeline does not describe why the system struggled, and the contemporaneous Nintendo press-release archive identifies relevant announcements without providing inspected technical or launch passages from them. It would therefore overstate the evidence to assign the console’s decline to one particular design choice, technical shortcoming, or business decision.
The responsible conclusion is narrower: the Virtual Boy was a distinctly positioned system introduced in 1995, and its commercial run was brief. The records cited here document regional release and sales entries, but they do not establish a complete causal account of its rise and fall. The archive index may help locate period documents, but its listing alone cannot substantiate details from those releases. Nintendo’s press-room archive
