On 7 May 2019, parents and a local herder staged a symbolic registration of 15 sheep at Jules-Ferry school in Crêts-en-Belledonne, in France’s Isère department. The protest was aimed at a proposed class closure after the school’s reported pupil count fell from 266 to 261. The sheep were part of a public protest—not evidence of a formal change in pupil status or proof that the class was saved.
Why did the school face a proposed class closure?
Contemporary reports said Jules-Ferry had 11 classes and that its reported enrollment had declined from 266 pupils to 261. A class closure was proposed in response to the lower count. Parents and residents objected to the prospect, arguing that a numerical threshold should not outweigh the school community’s needs. Le Parisien and Xinhua reported the enrollment figures in May 2019.
What happened when the sheep arrived?
On 7 May, a local herder brought sheep to the schoolyard, where 15 were ceremonially added to the register. Accounts differ on how many animals were present: Le Parisien reported about 65 sheep in the yard, while The Guardian, carrying an Agence France-Presse report, described the herder arriving with about 50. These are separate outlet estimates, not figures that can be reconciled from the reporting.
Some sheep were presented with birth certificates. The Scroll video post named three as Baa-bete, Dolly and Shaun; Le Parisien listed names including Jason Toison d’or, Panurge, Saute-Mouton and Mouton noir. The names and paperwork added to the ceremony’s humor, while making the protest visible to a wider audience. Scroll’s video report covered the event.

Was the sheep registration legally valid?
The contemporary coverage describes the registration as symbolic. It does not establish that the animals acquired legal pupil status, nor does the ceremony itself show that the school’s administrative decision changed. The distinction matters: adding sheep to a register was a protest tactic, not proof of a formal enrollment or a binding change to class planning.

The reports cited here do not establish the final administrative outcome. The Guardian/AFP quoted parent Gaëlle Laval saying, “Now we won’t have to close any classes,” as she smiled during the protest. That remark captures the mood of the demonstration, but it is not confirmation that officials reversed the proposal. Likewise, the coverage reports parents’ concern about decisions being driven by numbers, but does not provide an authoritative later decision or follow-up documenting what ultimately happened to the class. Mediapart also reported on the action in May 2019.
