Voletta Wallace, mother of the rapper known as the Notorious B.I.G., died on February 21, 2025, at age 78. The original headline’s age of 72 is incorrect: the Associated Press and Variety both reported her age as 78, and her publisher records her death in 2025.
How old was Voletta Wallace when she died?
Wallace was 78. The Associated Press reported that she died at her home in Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, after receiving hospice care; Monroe County Coroner Thomas Yanac confirmed her death and reported the cause as natural causes. Variety separately attributed confirmation of her age to the Monroe County Coroner’s Office. Associated Press; Variety
Who was Voletta Wallace?
Wallace was the mother of Christopher Wallace, the Brooklyn rapper celebrated as the Notorious B.I.G. He was 24 when he was killed in Los Angeles in 1997. The killing remains unsolved, according to the Associated Press.
After her son’s death, Wallace became a public steward of his legacy, despite describing herself as a private person. In an AP interview, she said: “They never knew me. The public never knew me. I was thrust into this environment, I should say, after he passed away, because I’m a very private person. Extremely private.”
