Michael B. Jordan won Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role for Sinners at the 32nd Annual Actor Awards on March 1, 2026. Viola Davis presented the award, and her reaction became a viral talking point afterward. PBS News characterized Jordan’s win as an upset; that was press framing, not an official award designation.

The 32nd Annual Actor Awards Presented by SAG-AFTRA took place March 1, 2026, at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, hosted by Kristen Bell. The ceremony streamed on Netflix. Viola Davis presented the leading male actor award. The official results list Michael B. Jordan as the winner for playing Smoke/Stack in Sinners. The film also won Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture, a separate award recognizing the ensemble. The official recipient list records both results.
Why was Jordan’s win called an upset?
“Upset” is a description used in coverage, not the name of an award or an official designation. PBS News framed Jordan’s win that way in its awards-season reporting and said Davis celebrated as the winner was announced. PBS News’ coverage supplies that context; the official results establish who won, not whether the result should be considered an upset.

What is known about Viola Davis’s reaction?
The moment drew attention beyond the ceremony. The Tonight Show’s March 10, 2026 episode description said Davis discussed her “viral reaction” to Jordan winning best actor at the Actor Awards. That supports describing her response as a viral talking point, but the description does not provide a transcript of her words during the announcement. The Tonight Show’s episode listing confirms the later discussion.
Without a verified transcript or accessible full announcement sequence in the cited sources, specific dialogue or a detailed play-by-play of Davis’s gestures cannot be established. The reliable account is that she presented the award, Jordan won, and her response was discussed afterward.

How was the winner selected?
SAG-AFTRA’s release says final voting opened January 14, 2026, to more than 118,000 members in good standing and closed February 27. Results were sealed by the official election firm until the live announcement. The release also describes two nominating panels, each made up of 2,500 randomly selected members from across the United States. These process details explain the organization’s voting system; they do not, by themselves, explain the result or the “upset” characterization. SAG-AFTRA’s event release gives the process details.
