In a 2018 interview with Scroll.in, Vikrant Massey described three different ways of approaching a role: Shutu in A Death in the Gunj stayed with him emotionally; Bablu in Mirzapur grew from regional research and observation; and he chose Broken for a heartbreak story he found relatable. Across them, he said screen time mattered less than whether the story and his part could connect with audiences.
Why A Death in the Gunj stayed with him
Massey said that “Shutu and A Death in the Gunj really changed a lot of things for me.” In Konkona Sen Sharma’s directorial debut, set during a family vacation, he played Shutu, a young man facing inadequacy, loss and failure while being bullied.
He described the role as emotionally difficult to put aside. “I had got the role home with me, and it had stayed,” he said. During filming, he found Shutu’s beliefs and problems becoming entangled with his own life. The interview also recounts how Sen Sharma saw Massey in Lipstick Under My Burkha and spoke with its director, Alankrita Shrivastava, who identified him as a fit for Shutu.
How he prepared to play Bablu in Mirzapur
In the first season of the crime series, Massey played Bablu, an intelligent, ambitious student who hoped to go to Lucknow and become a civil servant. Massey described Bablu as academically inclined and said the character partly reflected his own personality, alongside the writers’ imagination.

Research and regional observation
His preparation went beyond drawing on himself. He worked to understand eastern Uttar Pradesh speech and traveled in Poorvanchal, talking with people about their aspirations and frustrations. The interview presents those conversations and regional research as part of how he shaped Bablu.
Scroll.in’s 2018 interview described Mirzapur season one as a nine-episode season. Massey also said he was surprised by the decision that Bablu would not appear in season two.

Why he accepted Broken
Massey played Veer opposite Harleen Sethi as Sameera in the relationship drama. The interview describes them as two heartbroken people who find solace in one another. Massey said he accepted the project because he saw its premise as relatable: people experience heartbreak, love, humiliation and low self-confidence.
“I said yes to this project because of what I call its relatability quotient,” he said. Scroll.in reported in November 2018 that Broken was scheduled to stream on ALTBalaji from 27 November; that is a historical release detail, not confirmation of its present availability.

The principle connecting the three roles
Massey did not describe screen time as his measure of a worthwhile part. “To be honest, the amount of screen time I get hardly matters to me. The story has to be good and again, what’s paramount for me is whether people can relate to the story and my part.”
That principle comes through differently in his accounts of the three projects: Shutu’s emotional residue, Bablu’s researched regional grounding, and Veer’s place in a recognizable story of heartbreak. In the interview, these are distinct creative considerations, not a ranking of the roles.
