Canadian track cyclist Kelsey Mitchell, the Tokyo 2020 women’s sprint gold medallist, filmed a short prank in which her hidden Olympic medal set off a metal detector in Tokyo. When she revealed the medal, security staff laughed and applauded instead of treating it as a problem. The clip was reported in August 2021 and is best understood as a lighthearted moment, not a security incident.
What the video shows
According to Yahoo Sports Canada’s report of 25 August 2021, Mitchell walked through a metal detector with the gold medal tucked under her shirt. The alarm sounded, she pulled the medal out, and the security personnel laughed and applauded. The joke rests on a simple premise: a metal object on the body triggers the detector, and the reveal turns the alarm into the punchline.
The clip was shared on Instagram. Reporting from the same day, including NDTV’s coverage titled “Watch: Olympic Gold Medallist’s Security Check Prank Will Crack You Up,” describes the same sequence.
Where and when it happened
Contemporary reports place the incident in Tokyo, where the 2020 Games were held in 2021. They do not name a specific airport or checkpoint, and the exact filming date is not stated in the coverage reviewed. Treat “airport” as the reporters’ framing rather than a confirmed location, and do not assume a particular terminal.

Who Kelsey Mitchell is

The profile is the most reliable reference for her competition record and should be used for official Olympic details.
The caption and the reaction
NDTV attributes the following caption sentence to Mitchell’s Instagram post: “BUT the people were INCREDIBLE! So kind, polite, helpful, positive, friendly, AND they even laughed at my jokes (bonus!!)” The wording is as reported by NDTV in 2021. The original post was not checked directly for this account, so readers should treat it as a reported quotation rather than a verified transcript.

What the video does not establish
- Location: Only “Tokyo” is supported by the reporting. No airport or checkpoint is named.
- Date: The coverage is dated August 2021, but the filming date itself is not stated.
- Engagement: View and like counts appearing in secondary articles have not been verified and are not reported here.
- Medal material: Reporting does not say what the medal is made of beyond calling it a gold medal, so do not describe its composition.
- Screening rules: The clip is a joke with a friendly reaction. It says nothing about how security screening works or what travellers should expect.
How to cite or share it accurately
When referring to the clip, name the event as reported: a metal detector alarm in Tokyo, a gold medal revealed on the spot, and a laughing, applauding security team. Pair it with the 2021 reporting date and the Canadian Olympic Committee profile for context. Avoid describing it as an airport prank unless the original post confirms that.
