Why the Rules Keep Changing in Vicious: Bryan Bertino’s Explanation

Bryan Bertino says the shifting rules in Vicious reflect how unhealthy relationships can make a person feel they cannot win.

In Vicious, the rules change because director Bryan Bertino intended them to echo the instability of an unhealthy relationship: a person may keep trying to meet shifting demands and still feel they cannot win. Bertino explained that meaning in an interview with Russ Milheim for The Direct at Fantastic Fest 2025, published October 6, 2025. It is his account of the film’s intent, not the only interpretation viewers can bring to it.

What the changing rules mean in Vicious

The horror film follows Polly, played by Dakota Fanning, whose ordinary life is disrupted when a stranger arrives with a mysterious box that invites an evil entity out to play. As Polly confronts the threat, viewers encounter its supernatural rules through her point of view: she must work out which rules to follow and which might matter.

Bertino connected that uncertainty directly to unhealthy relationships. “So much about the movie is a metaphor for being in an unhealthy relationship,” he told The Direct. He added that “part of what you end up seeing in those kinds of relationships is that the rules change all the time.”

In that framing, the shifting rules are more than a puzzle for Polly to solve. They evoke a situation in which expectations keep moving, making it difficult to understand what will keep someone safe or satisfy the other person. Bertino put the sense of futility this way: “And the rules are going to change no matter how hard you fight.”

Why the audience learns the rules with Polly

Bertino described the story as experienced through Polly’s perspective. That choice makes viewers discover the danger as she does, rather than beginning with a complete, reliable rulebook. The uncertainty can make each apparent rule feel provisional: Polly has to judge what matters while facing the consequences of getting it wrong.

That point-of-view structure supports Bertino’s relationship metaphor. The audience’s uncertainty is part of the experience, while the meaning he described lies in the pattern of rules changing despite effort. The interview does not establish one definitive reading for every supernatural event, so viewers may interpret particular moments differently.

How the opening line introduces Polly’s vulnerability

The film opens with the line “I don’t want to be me.” Bertino said it was not in his first draft. Adding the line and its moment, he explained, crystallized the story and became a touchstone for later drafts. He connected it to Polly, to who she is, and to what the box chooses to abuse in her.

In Bertino’s account, the line gives an early point of entry into the film’s focus on vulnerability. It is not simply a general statement about the supernatural threat; he tied it to Polly and the particular part of her that the box exploits.

Why a stranger at the door is an unsettling starting point

Bertino also linked Vicious to a recurring storytelling impulse: the fear of an unexplained intrusion into ordinary life. “I get very frightened by the unexplained,” he said, describing his fear of things coming through one’s door and into one’s life. He said the device interests him as a starting point for a story.

In Vicious, the stranger and the box turn that fear into the event that draws Polly into the film’s central danger. Bertino’s comments explain why the setup appeals to him; they do not, by themselves, support broader claims about every film in his career.

What Bertino’s explanation does—and does not—settle

Bertino’s clearest answer is that the changing rules are meant to work as a metaphor for unhealthy relationships, where shifting expectations can leave someone feeling powerless. His comments also connect the film’s perspective, opening line, and stranger-at-the-door premise to Polly’s vulnerability and the unease of an unexplained intrusion.

That is the director’s stated intention, not proof that the metaphor excludes other readings. Viewers can draw their own conclusions about the entity and individual rules while recognizing the meaning Bertino explicitly described.
