Vettaiyan is a 2024 Tamil action drama about an encounter specialist who hunts a killer after a murder case, and it wants to be a film about the dangers of police encounter killings and vigilante justice. Critics largely agree on that ambition. They disagree on whether Rajinikanth’s star persona lets the message land or drowns it out. The most pointed review, from Scroll.in, argues that the anti-encounter message stays mostly in the dialogue while the star’s heroics keep the film’s real energy. The Indian Express gave the film 2.5/5 and The Times of India gave it 3/5, so the verdict is mixed rather than hostile.

Lyca’s synopsis describes a supercop forced to confront his moral compass after killing a criminal in a murder case. The CBFC record’s one-line synopsis frames it more starkly: an encounter specialist begins a hunt to seek justice for a victim. That gap between a heroic framing and a moral reckoning is the hinge on which every review turns.
The central argument: a critique built on a hero
Scroll.in’s review, by Sruthi Ganapathy Raman, sets out the film’s core tension. The film is making a case against encounter killings and the culture that celebrates them, but the case is delivered by a figure whose appeal depends on being celebrated. The review’s headline, “Social justice drama can’t escape the Rajinikanth star image problem,” compresses that argument. The reviewer also says the film wants audiences to believe it is not a typical supercop film, and it is that claim the review tests.

Dialogue versus spectacle
The review’s sharpest point is that the anti-encounter argument often lives in what characters say, while the staging keeps rewarding the opposite instinct. When Rajinikanth’s character is framed as a force of nature in action sequences, the viewer’s pleasure comes from the same kind of decisive violence the film is supposed to interrogate. A message delivered in speeches competes with images that sell the hero’s authority, and the review suggests the images usually win.
Why the change of heart matters less
The Indian Express makes a related structural complaint. Its reviewer, Avinash Ramachandran, argues that the film spends so long glorifying its trigger-happy cop that his later change of heart cannot carry much weight. A redemption arc depends on the audience having felt the pull of the behavior being condemned. If the early hours already enjoy that behavior, the late turn can feel like a tonal correction rather than a convincing moral break.

Read together, the reviews agree on the film’s ambitions and on the second half’s weakness, and they split on whether the star vehicle is a fatal flaw or a manageable compromise. The Times of India is the most generous of the four, but even it treats the star’s dominance as a limit on the ensemble.

Four questions for judging the film
If you are deciding whether the film’s social argument survives its stardom, these four questions track where the reviews diverge:
- How directly does the film challenge extrajudicial violence? Reviewers credit the subject. They differ on whether the challenge is dramatised or only stated.
- Do Rajinikanth’s mass moments undermine or carry the message? This is the central disagreement, and it cannot be settled by plot summary alone.
- Does the investigation and pacing hold up in the second half? Ramachandran, Srinivasan and Sridevi S all describe the back half as weaker or predictable.
- Are the ensemble and the education-system theme fully developed? Reviewers praise the subject and criticise how crowded or uneven its development is.
The education-system strand
The film is not only about encounters. Hindustan Times and The Indian Express both point to the coaching business, with its high-fee exam preparation and the debt it can leave families carrying, as a second major theme. The Times of India praises the film’s engagement with education-system exploitation. Those are the points where the film reaches beyond its hero, and they are also where critics say development is thinnest. A viewer who wants that theme in depth should expect it to be raised more often than it is explored.

Supporting cast and the star problem
Several reviewers make the same observation from different angles: the film’s large cast is shaped around one performer. Sridevi S says supporting actors are constrained by Rajinikanth’s stardom, and Srinivasan says the balance between aura and social discourse is never resolved. The ensemble is therefore best read as a set of resources the film does not fully use, not as a group of co-leads.
Two lines the film offers its own argument
Times of India reports the film’s characters setting two maxims against each other: “justice delayed is justice denied” and “justice hurried is justice buried.” The exchange is a useful key to the film’s argument. It frames the question as one of pace and procedure rather than of whether the state should kill suspects at all. These are lines spoken by characters, not statements by real-world legal authorities, and they show the film asking a question its action sequences answer differently.
Where to watch
Amazon announced that Vettaiyan would begin streaming on Prime Video on November 8, 2024, in Tamil with dubbed versions, and that it would be available in 240 countries and territories at the time of that announcement. That is a historical announcement. Current catalogue availability, language options and territorial access may have changed since then, so confirm directly with the platform before you watch.
Verdict
Vettaiyan is a film with a serious subject and a star who makes that subject harder to take seriously. Its critique of encounter killings is sincere and specific, especially in its dialogue and its handling of coaching debt and education pressure. Its structure, pacing and staging work against that critique, and the reviews agree the second half is where the problem is most visible. The ratings of 2.5/5 from The Indian Express and 3/5 from The Times of India are critical judgments by individual reviewers, not a consensus score or an audience measure. If you watch for the social argument, watch for where the film’s images and its speeches disagree.
