Veteran commentator Jim Ross criticized the way Vince McMahon appeared in a TMZ-produced special about Hulk Hogan, saying McMahon looked tired and withdrawn, while also saying McMahon seemed honest and that he heard nothing questionable in his remarks. Ross made those comments on his Grilling JR podcast in August 2025, and his criticism was aimed at both McMahon’s on-camera demeanor and the special’s editorial approach.

What Ross said about McMahon’s on-camera appearance

Ross’s sharpest personal remark concerned how McMahon looked on screen. As quoted in recaps of the episode, he said: “I thought he looked horrible, ‘he’ meaning Vince, I thought he looked tired, withdrawn, and had me concerned.” He also said McMahon seemed uncomfortable. These are Ross’s impressions of demeanor, not measured or independently verified observations, and they describe how McMahon appeared to Ross rather than any medical or psychological condition.

Ross did not frame McMahon as dishonest. He said McMahon “seemed to be very honest” and added that he did not hear Vince say anything in the TMZ piece that he felt was questionable. That qualification matters: the criticism of McMahon is about appearance and manner, while Ross’s remarks about the content of what McMahon said were largely favorable.

What Ross said about the special

Ross’s second line of criticism targeted the program itself. He called it “basically a fluff piece on steroids,” a phrase that signals he expected a harder-hitting account than the one he watched. He did not dismiss it entirely. He said it “told the story and mentioned a couple of things,” but that it did not offer much video to support the story being told. He added that he did not think the special was “all” false, but that he had expected it to be “a lot stiffer” than it was.

Readers should keep these two critiques separate. One concerns McMahon’s demeanor on camera; the other concerns the documentary’s evidentiary weight and tone. Ross made the first as a personal read of a person he has known for decades and the second as a professional view of the program’s construction.

Context: the special and the commentary

The program was a special about the late Hulk Hogan that included McMahon. It was reported as a FOX and TMZ production. Ross was not involved in producing it, and his remarks were made in a podcast discussion about the program, not inside the documentary itself. Anyone looking for Ross’s comments in the special’s footage will not find them there.

Two recaps covered the discussion. 411Mania published its account on August 14, 2025, focusing on Ross’s comments about a long single-camera shot, McMahon’s demeanor, and the treatment of Hogan’s story. Wrestling Inc. followed on August 26, 2025, quoting Ross on McMahon’s appearance and the documentary, and crediting the quotations to Grilling JR with a hat tip to Wrestling Inc. for the transcription.

How to cite these remarks

  • Attribute quotations to Ross’s Grilling JR discussion, not to the TMZ special.
  • Credit the recap you are drawing from. Both reports are secondary, so the wording may differ slightly from the original episode.
  • Do not describe Ross as having made these comments in the documentary, and do not describe him as having produced it.
  • Treat any statement about McMahon’s mood, comfort, or facial expression as Ross’s view, not as established fact.

The original episode and the documentary were not reviewed directly for this article. If you need audio-verified wording, listen to the Grilling JR episode from August 2025 before quoting it verbatim.
