Corral gunfight. The claim that Kilmer improvised it comes from a secondary source, an IMDb trivia entry, and no first-person account from Kilmer confirming it has been identified. The popular belief that the tin-cup duel with Johnny Ringo was improvised does not match Kilmer’s own account: he says that scene was written into the script. The best-documented example of Kilmer changing material is the death scene, where he replaced a long scripted monologue with a visual card game.

The wink before the O.K. Corral fight
n
In the lead-up to the gunfight, Doc gives Billy Clanton a brief wink. The IMDb trivia page for Tombstone states that the gesture was completely improvised by Kilmer. That is a trivia attribution, not an interview. A first-person statement from Kilmer describing that gesture as improvised has not been identified, so readers should treat the claim as widely repeated but unconfirmed by the actor himself.

The tin-cup duel: a scripted scene with a comic risk
n
Fan discussions often describe the cup flourish in the Ringo confrontation as an improvised bit of business. Kilmer’s account in American Cowboy’s “Tombstone Rides On” points the other way. Asked about the scene, he says it was written into the script: “It was written in the script.”
n
What Kilmer does describe is the work it took to make it land. He was unsure whether the comic flourish would read as funny to audiences, and he practiced handling the guns with both hands so the business would look natural. Scripted does not mean effortless; the scene was planned, then rehearsed until it could carry the tension of the duel.

n
Kilmer’s most specific account of reshaping his own material concerns Doc’s death. A five-page monologue had been written for the dying gunfighter. Kilmer’s objection was practical and character-based: Doc is dying of tuberculosis, and a man in that condition could not realistically deliver that speech. In his words: “But dying of tuberculosis—I can’t talk for five pages!”
n
His replacement was a visual sequence built around a card game. “So I came up with a visual sequence instead, the card game.” In the sequence, Doc urges Wyatt to keep living and to pursue a future, carried by action and image rather than dialogue. These comments are reproduced as interview excerpts in The Making of Tombstone: Behind the Scenes of the Classic Modern Western
