In a January 2024 appearance on Perth radio’s Pete and Kymba breakfast program, vegan activist Tash Peterson argued with the hosts and Ben D’Arcy, a Sydney man organizing a planned barbecue protest outside her Bicton home. PerthNow’s account describes a heated exchange about Peterson’s demonstrations at businesses, the purpose and fairness of protest, and the proposed barbecue. The event was planned for May 24, but the contemporaneous reports do not establish whether it went ahead.
What happened in the Mix 94.5 interview?
PerthNow reporter Zach Margolius reported on January 24, 2024, that Peterson and D’Arcy joined Pete and Kymba for a discussion that became confrontational. The account describes an argument involving both guests and the hosts; it is a report of the exchange, not a complete independently verified transcript.
D’Arcy objected to Peterson’s demonstrations at businesses. He said he believed targeting businesses was unfair and would not change public opinion. In the words PerthNow quoted him: “She’s a pest, and most WA residents are sick of her… and I’m sick of her targeting people’s businesses. It’s not right, it’s not fair.” That is D’Arcy’s opinion, not polling or evidence that most Western Australians share his view.
Peterson described her aim as persuading consumers to choose vegan options. PerthNow quoted her saying: “My goal is to reach consumers and make them aware of the animal slavery and holocaust industries, and choose the vegan option”. The language is her own charged framing of animal agriculture.

According to PerthNow, host Pete asked whether Peterson’s tactics put her safety at risk. Peterson said she was willing to take that risk and blamed non-vegans for animal abuse and killing. She also said the planned barbecue did not bother her and that she intended to disrupt it. The report says the hosts eventually told both guests to “go away.”
Who was Ben D’Arcy, and what was he planning?
D’Arcy was described by PerthNow as a Sydney resident organizing a barbecue protest outside Peterson’s home in Bicton, Perth. His stated objection was to Peterson’s demonstrations at businesses. The two sides therefore differed both over the tactics under discussion and over their purpose: Peterson said she wanted to reach consumers and prompt vegan choices, while D’Arcy argued that business-targeting protests were unfair and ineffective.

The planned gathering drew two different estimates in January coverage. PerthNow’s January 29 follow-up said more than 500 people were planning to attend. 7NEWS, reporting on January 30, said up to 500 were expected. Both figures described plans or expectations—not a count of people who actually attended.
Did the May 24 barbecue protest take place?
The reports reviewed here do not establish whether the May 24 event happened, how many people attended, or what took place at the site. The January reports document an announced plan and estimated attendance, not the event’s eventual outcome.

In its January 30 report, 7NEWS quoted a WA Police spokesperson saying: “Members of the community have a right to voice their concerns through protest activity, as long as that protest activity is conducted lawfully”. The spokesperson added that protest activity must not “impede the rights of others, which includes their right to conduct their business”. This is the statement reported by 7NEWS, not a complete account of protest law in Western Australia.
What was the wider context?
The coverage briefly placed the dispute alongside Peterson’s earlier demonstrations, including an incident involving fake blood at a Belmont butcher shop and a confrontation at chef John Mountain’s restaurant. 7NEWS also referred to the dispute with Mountain. These episodes provide context for D’Arcy’s criticism; they are not the subject of the Pete and Kymba interview.

In PerthNow’s January 29 follow-up, Peterson said she believed the planned protest would bring more attention to animal-rights issues. That article also recounted her allegations about police handling of previous incidents; those remain her claims as reported, not independently verified findings in the coverage described here.

The broadcast, as described by contemporaneous reporting, captured a dispute over the goals and perceived fairness of protest tactics. Peterson presented business demonstrations as a way to reach consumers; D’Arcy opposed those demonstrations and said they would not change public opinion. The reports record their positions, but do not establish that either tactic changed public sentiment or that public opinion was uniform. Nor do the attendance forecasts establish the eventual size or outcome of the planned home protest.
