Helen Louise Williams, also identified as Helen Louise Williams Tinch, was a vocal music educator whose career spanned more than 40 years. According to the family obituary as reported by WKBW, she taught in the Ossining and Manhattanville school districts and was a professor at Manhattanville College.

The obituary reporting says she was born in Buffalo, attended East High School, and studied at SUNY Fredonia. Her family described her as an advocate for the arts, education, women’s rights, racial equality, and social justice.

Why was Helen Williams in London?
She had traveled to London for the opening night of Vanessa Williams’s West End production of The Devil Wears Prada and to mark her 85th birthday with family and friends, according to The Independent. The reports describe the trip as a family and theater occasion; they do not connect it to her illness.

Vanessa Williams paid tribute to her mother, writing: “On December 28th, the world lost a powerhouse, dynamo and force of nature packed into a 5ft frame.” The statement was quoted by The Independent.

Her advice to students
In the family obituary, as quoted in People’s report carried by AOL, Williams urged her students: “Work the best you can and don’t let anyone tell you that you cannot do something — ever! Make up your mind, prepare yourself, study hard, and be very, very confident.”
Williams and her daughter also co-authored the 2012 memoir You Have No Idea, which recounts their relationship and family experiences, according to People’s report carried by AOL.
