A contemporary report documents particular protests in 2002, but it does not tell a representative personal history of Indian celebrants or establish that Indians broadly shared either view.
Who was Saint Valentine?
The identity of the Saint Valentine associated with February 14 is uncertain. The origins of the feast are murky, and familiar tales about Valentine’s life should be treated as legend rather than established biography. Ancient church history scholar Roland Kany describes the saint at the root of the tradition as nebulous in an interview with LMU Munich.
That uncertainty matters: the holiday’s modern meaning cannot be read straightforwardly from a well-documented life story. The record instead shows a religious feast whose association with romantic love emerged later.
How did February 14 become associated with love?
The U.S. Census Bureau’s summary of Valentine’s Day history says Europeans began associating the day with love and romance during the Middle Ages, in connection with the martyrdom of at least one Christian saint named Valentine. That is a later development, not evidence of an uninterrupted ancient Roman romantic festival.

Geoffrey Chaucer is central to the medieval literary story. An Associated Press historical feature explains that Chaucer linked a Saint Valentine’s feast with love and birds choosing mates. But the date is not as simple as the familiar account suggests: the AP reports that scholar Henry Ansgar Kelly connects Chaucer’s poem to a May feast, and that later conflation helped shift the association to February. What about the claim that Valentine’s Day came from Lupercalia?
Lupercalia was an ancient Roman festival, but the familiar claim that the Christian feast was deliberately set up to replace it is not established by the evidence described in the AP feature. University of Nevada, Las Vegas history professor Elizabeth White Nelson tells the AP: “People who think that’s the story haven’t read the letter that he actually wrote about Lupercalia.” Her comment concerns the claim that Pope Gelasius connected Saint Valentine’s feast with Lupercalia; it is not a denial that the ancient festival existed.

Why did some political actors oppose Valentine’s Day in India?
A UPI report published February 13, 2002 documented two specific examples. Shiv Sena activists burned Valentine’s Day cards in New Delhi. In Chandigarh, the youth wing of the Bharatiya Janata Party urged young people to stay away from the celebrations. The report described opponents framing the holiday as an invasion or insult to Indian culture and as Western cultural influence.
These examples show how the celebration could become a political symbol as well as a personal occasion. They establish opposition in particular places at a particular time; they do not show that all Indians, all Hindus, or all members of any political group held the same position. Nor do they establish how common protests were or what a particular celebrant experienced.

Can this be told as a personal history?
The available contemporary account records actions and political arguments, not first-person testimony from Indian celebrants or people who faced intimidation around the holiday. It therefore cannot support a representative personal narrative of how individuals experienced Valentine’s Day in India. A documentary-style account should keep that boundary visible rather than invent a couple, a confrontation, or a shared national response.
The evidence supports a more limited history: an uncertain Christian feast acquired a romantic meaning through medieval literary association, and some political actors in India later opposed the celebration by presenting it as foreign cultural influence. The personal stories behind either celebrating or resisting it require attributable, independently corroborated accounts.
