Is V/H/S/Beyond the Best V/H/S Movie Yet?

V/H/S/Beyond gives the found-footage anthology franchise a distinct sci-fi direction. Its varied tapes make a strong case for the top spot, though the segments are uneven.

V/H/S/Beyond has a strong case for being the franchise’s best entry: its science-fiction frame gives the found-footage anthology a fresh direction, and its six tapes offer strikingly different horror setups. But “best” is an argument, not a settled verdict. The segments vary in impact, so the film’s success depends on whether you value imaginative range over consistency.

Why V/H/S/Beyond makes a case for the top spot

Released to stream on October 4, 2024, V/H/S/Beyond is a 114-minute English-language horror and science-fiction anthology. Shudder describes its six tapes as “horror at the forefront of a sci-fi-inspired hellscape.” That premise gives the familiar found-footage format a useful organizing idea: instead of simply collecting unrelated scares, the film points its stories toward encounters with the strange and the unknown.

For a franchise anthology, variety matters. The segments move from a paranormal-response raid to a Bollywood-film setting, a skydiving trip, a grotesque dog daycare, and a UFO chase in the Mojave. Those premises provide distinct visual and tonal possibilities, while the found-footage perspective keeps each story grounded in the images its characters could plausibly record. The result is less a single sustained narrative than a sampler of sci-fi horror approaches.

That range is the strongest reason to call this the series’ best so far. It is not proof that every story works equally well, or that the film is objectively superior to every earlier installment. Rather, Beyond makes a persuasive case when the measure is how boldly the anthology uses its shared premise to make room for different kinds of horror.

What are the segments in V/H/S/Beyond?

The film has five named segments and a wraparound, “Abduction/Adduction,” which frames the collection. The segment names and short descriptions below are spoiler-light.

Tape What it brings to the anthology
“Stork” A paranormal-response raid encounters an avian-like monster.
“Dream Girl” A Mumbai-set story connected to the world of Bollywood films.
“Live and Let Dive” A skydiving outing is interrupted by an encounter.
“Fur Babies” A grotesque story set around a dog daycare.
“Stowaway” A UFO chaser in the Mojave has an encounter.

These descriptions identify the setups, not their twists or outcomes. The pieces are meant to be encountered as separate stories within a connected anthology presentation; the wraparound supplies a frame rather than turning them into conventional chapters of one continuous plot.

How consistent is the anthology?

Its biggest strength—variety—is also the source of its unevenness. A collection can offer several memorable ideas without every segment reaching the same level of suspense or payoff. Leslie Felperin’s October 2, 2024 review for The Guardian called the film “a pretty mixed bag,” while identifying “Fur Babies” as a personal favorite and praising elements of “Dream Girl” and “Live and Let Dive.” That is one critic’s response, but it captures the central qualification to the “best yet” claim: the film’s highs do not erase differences between its parts.

The wraparound, “Abduction/Adduction,” gives the tapes a shared frame, but the individual segments remain the main event. That is typical of an anthology’s trade-off: a strong connective idea can make the collection feel purposeful, yet it cannot guarantee that each story will satisfy every viewer. Here, the science-fiction theme gives the set a clearer identity than a purely miscellaneous playlist of scares.

Does the sci-fi angle change the V/H/S formula?

It expands the kinds of threats the franchise can explore without abandoning its found-footage approach. The stories still rely on limited perspectives and recorded images, but their science-fiction framing makes room for encounters beyond ordinary hauntings or human danger. That is a meaningful distinction for this entry: the premise is not just a label applied to the collection; it gives the varied tapes a common direction.

The approach will appeal most to viewers who enjoy speculative setups alongside horror and can accept changes in tone from one short to the next. Viewers looking for one tightly unified story, or an anthology in which every segment lands at the same level, may find the format’s inconsistency more noticeable.

What makes Stowaway notable?

“Stowaway” has a notable creative connection: it was Kate Siegel’s directorial debut, was written by Mike Flanagan, and stars Alanah Pearce. In a ComingSoon interview published on October 4, 2024, Siegel said, “Oh, I’m a huge fan of the franchise.” Pearce said she had not known the franchise before filming and watched the earlier movies afterward. That context gives the segment a distinct production story, but it does not by itself settle how it ranks against the other tapes.

Is V/H/S/Beyond connected to the other movies?

It belongs to the V/H/S anthology franchise, but its six-tape structure is designed around a new set of stories. The named segments are presented as parts of this film’s collection, with “Abduction/Adduction” as its wraparound. The available film descriptions establish that anthology framework; they do not require a viewer to treat Beyond as one continuous sequel plot.

How the critical reception shapes the verdict

Rotten Tomatoes displayed a 90% Tomatometer from 61 reviews and a 54% Popcornmeter from more than 250 ratings when accessed in 2026. These are dynamic aggregator figures, not permanent measures of quality; the critic and audience scores also reflect different groups and should not be treated as interchangeable. The site’s displayed critics’ consensus praised the film’s assortment of shorts and its appeal to horror and sci-fi fans.

That positive consensus and Felperin’s mixed-bag assessment can both be true. The first emphasizes the anthology’s appeal as a varied collection; the second draws attention to how unevenly its individual segments work. On balance, V/H/S/Beyond earns a “best yet” argument for its sci-fi identity and range, not because every tape is equally effective or all reviewers agree.
