Sanic is a fan-made, deliberately rough version of Sonic the Hedgehog. The first documented Sanic video is commonly credited to YouTuber 0nyxheart: “How 2 Draw Sanic Hegehog,” uploaded on March 31, 2010, according to Know Your Meme’s Sanic history. The meme’s later spread involved other fans, so that credit does not make 0nyxheart the sole creator of every version of Sanic.
Who created Sanic?
Know Your Meme credits the YouTube username 0nyxheart with the first documented Sanic video, “How 2 Draw Sanic Hegehog.” It dates the upload to March 31, 2010. The video showed a drawing of Sonic made in MS Paint, accompanied by distorted music from the Green Hill Zone.
The original upload was later removed. Know Your Meme also cautions that later accounts claiming to be 0nyxheart are impersonators, so a current account should not be treated as verified. No verified statement from the creator explaining the drawing’s intent is documented in this history.
How did Sanic spread beyond the first video?
An early Newgrounds contribution
On July 19, 2010, Newgrounds Forums member fawfulBeans posted a Sonic drawing captioned “Sanic Runs Fast.” Know Your Meme records it as an early step in the meme’s wider circulation, not proof that fawfulBeans originated the first Sanic.

Later video remixes and performances
The documented timeline continued with a Sanic and “Gotta Go Fast” animation and music video by Utentagen on November 2, 2011, presented as a purported Sonic Generations leak. On March 15, 2012, MixMastaCopyCat posted “Let’s Play Sanic The Game,” pairing gameplay with an exaggerated performance. These entries show how the character moved through fan-made videos and other community contributions.
How is Sanic related to “Gotta Go Fast”?
Sanic overlaps with the separate “Gotta Go Fast” fan-art and catchphrase tradition, but they are not the same origin story. The dated video and forum post document early Sanic artifacts; later work joined Sanic imagery with the “Gotta Go Fast” phrase. Know Your Meme’s history of “Gotta Go Fast” provides context for that adjacent tradition.

What the origin record establishes—and what it does not
- Documented attribution: Know Your Meme credits 0nyxheart with the March 31, 2010 video and identifies its title and basic contents.
- Community spread: The later Newgrounds post and videos document contributions by other creators.
- Not established: The available history does not show that 0nyxheart authored every subsequent version, that Sanic had only one contributor, or what the original artist intended.
Because the first upload is removed and the account history is not independently authenticated here, the most precise answer is that 0nyxheart is credited with the first documented Sanic video—not that a fully verified record identifies one person as the sole creator of the meme.
