The surface that shows a film in a theater is called a cinema screen, movie screen or, more technically, a projection screen. “Silver screen” is a traditional expression for cinema, while IMAX and ScreenX are branded presentation formats—not generic names for the screen itself.
What is the screen in a cinema called?
In everyday speech, it is a movie screen or cinema screen. “Projection screen” describes its function: the physical surface on which a projector displays the image. The specific surface and equipment can differ from one venue to another, so the name alone does not tell you its size, shape or technical design.
What does “silver screen” mean?
“Silver screen” is an established, traditional expression associated with cinema. The phrase has a historical connection to a type of screen, but it is not a reliable description of the material used for a modern auditorium screen. Calling a theater display a silver screen is generally an idiom, not a claim that its surface is silver. Wikipedia’s overview of the term discusses its history.
Are IMAX and ScreenX types of cinema screens?
They are branded cinema systems or presentation formats, not alternate generic names for a movie screen. The brands describe aspects of how a film is presented; the physical screen and setup can vary by theater.

IMAX
IMAX is a branded theater system and presentation format. Its theaters do not all use one identical screen or projection setup. IMAX Corporation says some of its screens are 100 or more feet wide and eight stories tall; that company-reported figure applies to some IMAX screens, not to all IMAX venues or cinema screens generally. IMAX Corporation’s filing describes its theater systems and screen dimensions.
ScreenX
ScreenX extends selected imagery beyond the main screen onto the auditorium’s side walls. Cinemark describes it as a multi-projection experience with a panoramic 270-degree view. That is the exhibitor’s promotional description of the format, not an independent technical assessment. Cinemark’s ScreenX page explains the experience.

Does the name tell you how large the screen is?
No. Cinema screens vary by venue and format. The figure of 100 or more feet wide and eight stories tall is IMAX Corporation’s statement about some of its screens; it is not a standard size or a useful estimate for a typical theater. For a specific show, consult the venue’s description rather than assuming that a format name guarantees one screen size or configuration.
