Underworld: Awakening (2012) has the highest reported worldwide theatrical gross of the five Underworld films, at $160,379,930. The ranking below uses that one measure: nominal worldwide gross as reported by The Numbers and a franchise summary. Domestic and international splits and reported budgets are shown for context, not as part of the ranking.
How this ranking measures box office returns
Box office “returns” can mean several things, so it helps to be precise. This ranking compares the total theatrical gross each film is reported to have earned across all markets. It does not adjust for inflation, and it does not measure profit. The first four totals come from individual film pages on The Numbers, which lists domestic, international, and worldwide grosses along with production budgets and release dates. The fifth total, for Underworld: Blood Wars, comes from a franchise summary rather than a film-specific page, so it carries a weaker level of verification than the other four.
- Metric: reported worldwide theatrical gross, in nominal dollars.
- Not inflation-adjusted: The Numbers shows adjusted domestic figures for some titles. Those are not mixed into this comparison, and the sources do not provide a consistent inflation-adjusted worldwide series, so no claim is made about which film performed best after adjustment.
- Not profit: gross is what audiences and exhibitors generated at the box office. Marketing, distribution costs, and exhibitor shares are not captured by subtracting a budget from it.
- Database figures: The Numbers totals can be revised, so they reflect the database at the time of retrieval.
The ranking
| Rank | Film | Release year | Reported worldwide gross | Domestic | International | Reported production budget |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Underworld: Awakening | 2012 | $160,379,930 | $62,321,039 | $98,058,891 | $70 million |
| 2 | Underworld: Evolution | 2006 | $113,417,762 | $62,318,875 | $51,098,887 | $45 million |
| 3 | Underworld | 2003 | $95,708,457 | $51,970,690 | $43,737,767 | $22 million |
| 4 | Underworld: Rise of the Lycans | 2009 | $92,141,886 | $45,802,315 | $46,339,571 | $35 million |
| 5 | Underworld: Blood Wars | 2016 (per the franchise summary) | $81,093,313 (franchise summary) | not stated (franchise summary) | not stated (franchise summary) | not stated (franchise summary) |
The first four rows are from individual The Numbers pages (2003, 2006, 2009, and 2012 entries). Together, the five reported worldwide grosses add up to about $542.7 million. That sum is simple arithmetic on the listed totals, not a figure published by any source.
Film by film
1. Underworld: Awakening (2012): $160,379,930
The top spot is not a close call. Awakening earned about $47 million more worldwide than Evolution, and it is the only entry where international grosses clearly outpaced domestic ones: $98,058,891 abroad against $62,321,039 at home. International takings made up about 61 percent of its worldwide total. The Numbers lists a $70 million production budget and a January 20, 2012 domestic release, the largest reported budget in the series.

2. Underworld: Evolution (2006): $113,417,762
Evolution was the first entry to pass the $100 million mark. A Sony Pictures Entertainment press release dated December 7, 2006 stated that Screen Gems’ Underworld: Evolution “topped the box office and went on to gross more than $100 million worldwide.” That statement is studio-authored and describes the 2006 performance; the current database total of $113,417,762 from The Numbers is higher and is the figure used here. Domestic and international grosses are almost identical, at $62,318,875 and $51,098,887. The Numbers lists a $45 million budget and a January 20, 2006 domestic release.
3. Underworld (2003): $95,708,457
The original film is the most efficient earner in the table relative to its reported budget. The Numbers lists a $22 million production budget, and the worldwide gross is about 4.35 times that figure. For comparison, Awakening is about 2.3 times its $70 million budget, and Evolution is about 2.5 times its $45 million budget. These multiples are simple division on reported numbers, not profit calculations, because they do not account for marketing, distribution, or exhibitor shares. The film opened September 19, 2003 in the domestic market, and it is the only entry where domestic gross made up a clear majority of its worldwide total, at about 54 percent.
Rank #2
4. Underworld: Rise of the Lycans (2009): $92,141,886
Rise of the Lycans finished about $3.57 million behind the original film, a narrow gap that should not be read as a meaningful difference in performance. Its international gross of $46,339,571 slightly exceeded its domestic gross of $45,802,315, making it one of the few entries where the two markets were nearly even. The Numbers lists a $35 million budget and a January 23, 2009 domestic release. Sony’s official page describes the film as a prequel tracing the origins of the blood feud between vampires and Lycans, with Lucian, Viktor, and Sonja named in its synopsis.
5. Underworld: Blood Wars (2016): $81,093,313
Blood Wars ranks last on the franchise summary’s reported worldwide gross of $81,093,313. This is the least strongly verified figure in the table. A film-specific page or official distributor source was not checked for this total, and the domestic, international, and budget values are not stated in the summary. Treat its position as provisional until a film-level source confirms the total.

What the gaps between films show
- First to second: Awakening leads Evolution by about $47 million on reported worldwide gross.
- Second to third: Evolution leads the original Underworld by about $17.7 million.
- Third to fourth: the original Underworld leads Rise of the Lycans by about $3.57 million, a close placement.
- Fourth to fifth: Rise of the Lycans leads Blood Wars by about $11 million on the franchise summary’s total.
The biggest reported gap, between the first two films and the rest, reflects how the franchise’s later and more internationally focused releases performed rather than a steady decline. Reading the table, the domestic and international columns show that the franchise’s commercial center moved over time: the 2006 and 2003 films relied on the American market for slightly more than half their totals, while Awakening drew most of its gross from abroad.

Reported budgets are useful for scale, but they are not a profit measure. A film with a $22 million budget and a $95.7 million gross may have returned less money to its distributor than the headline suggests, once theatre shares and marketing spending are counted. The same caution applies to the largest grosses. Awakening earned the most in total, but its $70 million budget means its gross-to-budget multiple is lower than the original film’s. Use the budget column as one way to compare scale, not as a verdict on which film was most successful.
Rank #4
Limits of the comparison
Three limits shape how far the ranking can be taken. First, every total is nominal, so later films are not automatically discounted for inflation or ticket price changes; a like-for-like comparison of purchasing power would require a consistent inflation-adjusted dataset, which the sources do not supply. Second, the figures are database-reported and may be updated. Third, Blood Wars rests on a single franchise summary rather than a film-level record, so its position is the least certain. Within those limits, the order of the first four films is well supported by the individual pages, and the close placement of the original and Rise of the Lycans is the one comparison where small revisions could change the outcome.
