That premise helps explain why the creature can read as an altered human more than a traditional wolf-man—and why critics disagreed about whether its makeup made the change frightening or convincing.
What is Universal’s new Wolf Man about?
The 2025 Universal and Blumhouse horror film stars Christopher Abbott as Blake, Julia Garner as his wife Charlotte, and Matilda Firth as their daughter Ginger. Blake takes his family to his inherited childhood home in rural Oregon. After an animal attack, his condition and behavior deteriorate as the family shelters inside. The story puts a family under pressure at the same time that Blake’s body is changing. Showtimes’ film listing and synopsis describes the setup.
The film opened theatrically in the United States on January 17, 2025. A contemporary listing gives a runtime of 103 minutes and an R rating; ratings are territory-specific, so that classification should not be assumed to apply outside the market covered by the listing. Assignment X’s review provides those details.
Why does the Wolf Man look more human than wolf?
The movie’s transformation is presented as disease-like, rather than as a classic supernatural werewolf curse. That changes the design’s emphasis: instead of starting from an unmistakably animal creature, the film’s horror can come from watching a person become disturbingly altered while remaining recognizably human. ComicBook.com’s discussion of the premise characterizes the approach as disease-like.

That human recognizability is also the source of the title’s tension. Calling the creature a “man wolf” captures the impression that Blake’s humanity remains visible, while “and even that’s pushing it” reflects a critical argument that the design does not always deliver a convincing wolf-man. It is an interpretation of the film’s effect, not a consensus verdict.
What did critics think of the creature and the film?
Rotten Tomatoes’ first-reviews roundup, updated May 1, 2025, reported a 47% Tomatometer score. That is a dated snapshot from that roundup, not a verified current score. The same collection shows why a single number cannot explain the response: it reports praise for Abbott’s performance and practical makeup effects, alongside criticism of the screenplay, Charlotte’s characterization, and the creature makeup. Reviewers also differed on whether the design was convincing.
Tim Robey of The Daily Telegraph, quoted in the roundup, wrote, “Abbott, almost invariably good, is perfect here.” William Bibbiani of The Wrap offered the opposing view of the makeup: “The makeup they settled on struggles to terrify. It’s not even consistently convincing.” Those are critics’ judgments reproduced by Rotten Tomatoes’ May 1, 2025 first-reviews roundup, not statements from the filmmakers.

Think of Wolf Man less as a straightforward return to the classic supernatural werewolf and more as a family-centered body-horror story. Its central tension comes from a disease-like change threatening Blake and his family, while the design asks viewers to accept a creature that retains a human aspect. Whether that feels unsettling or insufficiently wolf-like depends in part on what a viewer wants from the monster: recognizable humanity and grotesque transformation, or a more immediately animal silhouette.
