What is Unhinged about?
Directed by Derrick Borte and written by Carl Ellsworth, Unhinged stars Russell Crowe as Tom, a driver who becomes fixated on Rachel Flynn after a traffic confrontation. Caren Pistorius plays Rachel, an exhausted hair stylist running late for her son Kyle’s school drop-off. Is Unhinged based on a true story or on Duel?
No. Netflix Tudum describes the film as fictional and based on an original screenplay. Crowe said Steven Spielberg’s 1971 film Duel was one influence; that does not make Unhinged an adaptation of Duel. The story is set in and around New Orleans.
Rank #2
- Academy Award winner Russell Crowe stars in a timely psychological thriller that explores the fragile balance of a society pushed to the edge, taking something we?ve all experienced ? road rage ? to an unpredictable and terrifying conclusion.
What have critics and audiences said?
On the Rotten Tomatoes page accessed in 2026, the Tomatometer was 49% based on 208 critic reviews, while the Popcornmeter was 77% based on more than 2,500 verified audience ratings. These are changing page snapshots, not fixed or universal measures of quality.
Rotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus says: “Russell Crowe makes for a compulsively watchable villain, but Unhinged lacks enough intelligence or depth to get sufficient mileage out of its pulpy premise.” The gap between the listed critic and audience scores is a useful sign that the two ratings differ; it does not explain why, or predict how any individual viewer will feel.
Rank #3
- This item has no German language and subtitles.
Who might enjoy the film?
Unhinged may suit viewers looking for an intense thriller built around an escalating road-rage encounter. Its US R rating for strong violence and language is worth considering before watching. If you prefer restrained suspense or avoid graphic violence and persistent strong language, this may not be a good fit.
