Mr. Anderson is Thomas Anderson, the hacker known as Neo, played by Keanu Reeves in The Matrix (1999). Thomas Anderson is the name attached to his everyday life as a computer programmer; Neo is his hacker alias.
Why is Neo called Mr. Anderson?
“Mr. Anderson” is the name used for Thomas Anderson in his ordinary-world identity. Before he becomes known as Neo, he works as a computer programmer while living a second life as a hacker. The British Film Institute describes Thomas Anderson as an IT programmer who uses Neo as his hacker alias; the AFI Catalog likewise identifies Neo as Anderson’s hacker name.
In the film, the contrast between those names reflects two sides of the same character: the identity he inhabits in everyday life and the one associated with his hidden life as a hacker. That contrast is a useful way to understand the character, rather than a confirmed, definitive explanation of the names’ symbolism.
Who is Thomas Anderson, and how does he become Neo?
At the start of the story, Anderson is a New York computer programmer troubled by the sense that something is wrong with the world he experiences. After a message on his computer tells him to follow the white rabbit, Trinity brings him into contact with Morpheus. Morpheus reveals the truth about that world, and Anderson joins the fight against the forces controlling it. Warner Bros.’ official film page summarizes this progression, while the BFI places his meeting with Morpheus at the center of his recruitment.

Film records establish that Thomas Anderson is a programmer, that Neo is his hacker alias, and that Keanu Reeves plays the character. They do not establish one definitive explanation for the symbolic meaning of “Neo,” the surname Anderson, or every use of “Mr. Anderson” in the film. Readings about a conflict between an imposed identity and a chosen one can be compelling, but they remain interpretations rather than confirmed production facts.
