For a standard 12-inch LP, Taylor lists a finished cover size of 12.375 inches square. But “vinyl cover” can also mean an inner sleeve, a protective outer sleeve or a print template, and each has different dimensions. The right measurement depends on which part you mean and what needs to fit inside it.
What does “vinyl cover” mean?
It may refer to the cardboard jacket that holds the record, the inner sleeve around the disc, a protective sleeve fitted over the jacket, or the artwork file used to print packaging. Those components are not interchangeable: an artwork template is not a ready-made protector, and a protective jacket can be larger than the cardboard cover it surrounds.
For a 12-inch LP cover, Taylor gives a standard size of 12.375 inches square. The Library of Congress (LOC), by contrast, specifies dimensions for components in a preservation housing system: a card sleeve and a larger polyester jacket designed to fit over it. Those LOC figures are not a universal retail-jacket standard.

The LOC’s card-sleeve measurements are outer dimensions. Its polyester-jacket measurements are minimum outer dimensions for a separate component designed to fit over the card sleeve; the specification says, “The vendor must ensure that the polyester jackets fit over the card sleeves for the corresponding disc size.”

How to choose the right size
- Identify the component. Decide whether you need an inner sleeve, a finished cardboard jacket, a protective outer sleeve or an artwork template.
- Match the record format. The cited LOC specifications cover 7-, 10- and 12-inch discs; they also list a 16-inch preservation format. Disc format alone does not tell you the finished package size.
- Measure the jacket you want to protect. Measure its width and height, and account for the spine thickness. A nominal 12-inch record size does not establish the dimensions of its jacket.
- Check the outer sleeve’s internal dimensions and capacity. Pallas, for example, lists separate packaging for one 12-inch record and a polybag for an outer sleeve with a maximum 6 mm spine. Check the specific product’s current details at Pallas.
- For custom or multi-record packaging, use the supplier’s exact template. Green Lakes Pressing provides separate 12-inch outer-sleeve templates for one, two and three records, with different spine widths, as well as 10-inch and 7-inch templates. See its packaging templates.
Artwork dimensions are not sleeve dimensions
When preparing artwork for a pressing or packaging order, use the current template from the supplier making the package. Taylor provides templates for jackets, sleeves and inserts at its templates page. A production template includes the layout needed to make the item; it should not be treated as the dimensions of an off-the-shelf protective outer sleeve.
For gatefolds, custom jackets or multiple records, confirm the record count and spine width in the template. A template for one record may not match a thicker package, even when both are made for 12-inch discs.
