In a December Oval Office interview reported by New York Magazine on January 26, 2026, Donald Trump paused while trying to recall the word “Alzheimer’s” in a discussion of his late father’s health. Press secretary Karoline Leavitt supplied the word. Trump then said, “Like an Alzheimer’s thing. Well, I don’t have it.” The reported exchange does not establish any diagnosis of Trump.

What happened in the interview, in order

The sequence below follows Ben Terris’s account in New York Magazine, the article titled “The Superhuman President.” It is the source closest to the interview, and its quotations are the ones used here.

  1. Trump described his father’s later years. Discussing Fred Trump, he said: “He had one problem. At a certain age, about 86, 87, he started getting, what do they call it?”

  2. He searched for the word. Terris reports that Trump pointed to his forehead and looked to Leavitt for the term.

  3. Leavitt supplied it. She said, “Alzheimer’s.”

  4. Trump responded. He said: “Like an Alzheimer’s thing. Well, I don’t have it.”

  5. Terris asked whether he thought about it. Trump answered: “No, I don’t think about it at all. You know why? Because whatever it is, my attitude is whatever.”

The exchange concerned the illness Trump was describing in connection with his father. It was not a discussion of a medical finding about Trump himself.

  • It shows a pause in which Trump could not retrieve a word for an illness, and a moment in which an aide supplied it.
  • It shows Trump’s own denial: “Well, I don’t have it,” followed by his statement that he does not think about the subject.
  • It does not show that Trump has Alzheimer’s disease or any other medical condition. No medical professional quoted in the reporting diagnoses him.
  • It does not show cognitive decline by itself. A single word-finding pause, in a long conversation with many topics, is not a clinical measure in either direction.

Readers who see the phrase “forgets the word” in headlines should keep the subject of the sentence in view. The word Trump was searching for named the disease that he said his father had.

What a cognitive screening result means

Neurologist Jeffrey Kuhlman, speaking on CNN, drew a distinction that is useful for reading any health claim about a public figure. He said: “So, there’s screening tests, but the purpose of a screening test is further evaluation needed.”

In practical terms, a screening is a prompt for the next step, not a final verdict. A screening that raises a concern leads to fuller evaluation, and a screening that does not raise one does not replace clinical assessment in someone with symptoms. Kuhlman’s comment is general medical context; it is not a statement about Trump’s health.

Not the same as the 2024 Biden exchange

A separate and easily confused event occurred in February 2024, when Joe Biden was asked about his own memory. He said: “No, look, my memory has not gotten—my memory is fine.” That was a different person, a different year, and a different question. It should not be combined with the January 2026 Trump report.

The verifiable record

The documented facts are a short exchange in an interview: a word-search pause, a word supplied by Leavitt, and Trump’s denial in his own words. Whether any of this bears on a health question would require medical evaluation, which a single interview cannot provide.
