A PerthNow report published on 11 August 2023 said a Glitz & Co pageant scheduled for Perth would accept contestants from six months to 38 years old. The report expected 22 contestants. Those figures describe the event as it was announced in 2023—not a current Perth listing—and the report does not establish whether it went ahead as planned.
What the 2023 Perth report described
PerthNow reporter Kate Emery described the event as the first of its kind in Western Australia. Its director, Michaella Evans, said it was not open to the public. The reported age range—from six months to 38 years—spanned infants, children and adults; the article did not specify separate age divisions or explain how judging varied by age.
The event was presented as a US-style pageant. According to the report, contestants modelled outfits and were judged on routines and technique. Categories included formal wear and fun fashion; interview questions and photo submissions were optional.
What the reported judging and styling involved
The contestant handbook was described as saying that judging covered “technique and attire” but not “physical appearance.” The report also noted optional styling such as spray tans, fake nails, hairpieces and fake teeth, known as “flippers,” as well as airbrushed photographs intended to make contestants look like dolls. Evans said there were limits on dress length and contestants were not penalised for wearing less makeup.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
These details are the 2023 report’s account of the event and handbook, not independently verified rules. They show why the distinction between judging technique and appearance is contested: the stated criteria may not have centred on physical features, while the reported styling and presentation still involved appearance.
Why people disagreed about child pageants
Those quoted in the report described sharply different interpretations of what a pageant could mean for a child. Supporters pointed to confidence, self-worth and charitable activity; critics questioned the emphasis on appearance, children’s wellbeing and the values communicated by competition.

The case made by a parent and the organiser
Parent Illona Perovic said the experience had built her daughter’s confidence and helped her raise money for charity: “It’s meant to build the girls up, to give them self-worth,” and, “It’s totally built her up.” Evans said: “What we say to a contestant is you do what you’re comfortable doing.” She also argued that girls were not penalised for wearing less makeup and that dress lengths were limited.
The concerns raised by critics
Adolescent psychologist Michael Carr-Gregg opposed pageants, saying: “I think it blurs the lines between childhood and adulthood.” He described his concern as: “To me this is premature sexualisation, which is directly correlated to eating disorders, anxiety, depression, and body image issues.” That is his view as quoted in the report; it is not, by itself, evidence that participation causes those outcomes. The report did not provide supporting study details or outcome research specific to this event.

WA Commissioner for Children and Young People Jacqueline McGowan-Jones said: “I worry about their mental health, I also worry about what is the reason for the beauty pageant: people are making money out of this,” and, “I just don’t think that’s the right message we should be giving young girls, that your looks are what makes you competitive.” WA Minister for Youth Simone McGurk said there was increasing awareness of concerns about children’s sexualisation and exploitation through beauty pageants, “as distinct from talent contests,” and that people were right to be concerned. She also said a ban was not needed and government supported other opportunities for young people.

In 2014, a WA parliamentary committee recommended considering whether the Children and Community Services Act 2004 should be amended to regulate child beauty pageants. This was a recommendation to consider regulation, not a recommendation for a ban. The WA Government’s response said pageant-specific legislation was unwarranted and existing mechanisms provided protection. That was the government’s position in 2014, not a legal determination about the 2023 event or a complete account of later policy.

The official legislation listing identifies a version of the Act current from 1 May 2026. It includes provisions concerning child employment and performances involving modelling or posing, and a power to limit or prohibit employment if a child’s wellbeing is likely to be jeopardised. WA government guidance updated 4 September 2026 says children of any age may perform professionally as entertainers if the work does not prevent school attendance, while other restrictions apply to child employment.
These provisions are relevant context, but the sources do not determine whether or how they applied to the pageant. That depends on the facts and legal interpretation. They do not establish that the event was categorically legal, illegal or exempt.

What is and is not known now
The headline’s six-month minimum refers to the event described in PerthNow’s August 2023 report. The sources establish neither that it took place exactly as planned nor that Glitz & Co later held events in Perth. They also do not provide independent research measuring the effects of children’s participation in pageants. The reported benefits and risks should therefore be understood as views offered by people involved in, or commenting on, the debate—not as proven outcomes for every child.
