Val Kilmer’s Spartan (2004) is a brisk political thriller written and directed by David Mamet. Kilmer plays a government operative searching for the president’s missing daughter; what begins as a rescue mission grows into an inquiry into a wider cover-up. Calling it Kilmer’s “most underrated” film is a matter of taste, but its taut setup, sharp dialogue and strong cast make a case for revisiting it.

What is Spartan about?

Robert Scott (Val Kilmer), an experienced government operative, is assigned to find Laura Newton (Kristen Bell), the president’s daughter. He works alongside younger agent Curtis (Derek Luke). When officials say Laura is dead, the agents encounter evidence that she may still be alive and continue pursuing the case, uncovering a larger government cover-up. The distributor’s synopsis connects the plot to a human-trafficking ring; these are fictional thriller elements, not a portrayal of a real investigation.

The movie moves among political drama, covert-operations thriller and crime story. Its central hook is not simply the search, but the changing information: each new development forces Scott and Curtis to reconsider what they have been told and whom they can trust.

Why the Mamet-Kilmer pairing stands out

Mamet wrote and directed the film, with Kilmer as its lead and Derek Luke as his younger partner. William H. Macy, Ed O’Neill and Kristen Bell round out a cast that gives the compact story several recognizable faces. AFI catalogs Spartan as a political drama; Rotten Tomatoes places it in Mystery & Thriller. Those labels capture different sides of a film that combines an official operation with a conspiracy-driven plot.

Mamet’s dialogue is a defining part of the experience. The exchanges are terse and controlled, while the story releases information in bursts rather than stopping to explain every turn. That approach suits a protagonist whose job depends on reading people and acting quickly, though viewers who prefer a more explicit account of motives may find the film’s clipped style withholding.

Is Spartan underrated?

“Underrated” is an argument, not a measurable status. The available reception figures suggest a film with a respectable but not overwhelming response: Rotten Tomatoes listed a 66% Tomatometer from 131 reviews and a 62% Popcornmeter from more than 10,000 ratings when accessed in 2026. These platform scores can change. The site’s critics consensus says, “A good cast and Mamet’s mastery over the written language elevate an otherwise conventional thriller.”

A June 2004 Blackfilm DVD review described it as “a crisp, taut thriller, laden with surprises and frenetic in its pace.” That is one reviewer’s assessment, but it reflects the qualities likely to appeal to viewers who enjoy brisk plotting and dialogue-forward suspense.

There is also a career-context reason to return to it. The Associated Press retrospective places Spartan among the smaller films Kilmer made after The Island of Dr. Moreau, offering context for why it may be less prominent in discussions of his work. That does not establish that it was overlooked, or that it is his best film. The case for revisiting it is narrower: it is a distinctive Mamet-Kilmer collaboration whose strengths are easy to miss if it is remembered only as a conventional thriller.

Release details and where the listings differ

AFI’s catalog records an R rating, a 106-minute duration and a March 12, 2004 opening in Los Angeles and New York. Rotten Tomatoes lists a 1 hour 47 minute runtime and a January 31, 2004 release date. Those entries use different release and runtime listings, so the dates should not be collapsed into a single claim. A Company Film’s distributor page also gives the production year as 2004 and the runtime as 106 minutes.

A DVD review appeared in June 2004, establishing that the film had a DVD edition at the time. That historical record does not confirm what editions, regions or streaming options are currently available.

Who should watch it?

  • For Mamet fans: The appeal is the clipped dialogue and the steady shift in what the characters know.
  • For Kilmer viewers: Scott is a focused operative at the center of a tightly contained mission, rather than a showy action hero.
  • For thriller viewers: Expect a political mystery that pivots into a broader conspiracy, with disturbing fictional subject matter involving trafficking.
  • For viewers seeking a definitive verdict on Kilmer’s career: This film makes a plausible case for greater attention, not an objective ranking of his work.
