In the Netflix docuseries Reality Check: Inside America’s Next Top Model, Tyra Banks looks back at her on-air outburst at Tiffany Richardson, a Cycle 4 contestant eliminated in 2005. Banks calls it the “toughest” moment of her time on the series and says, “I went too far. I lost it.” Those words are quoted here as The Independent reported them from the documentary. Separately, the Associated Press reported in June 2026 that Banks has sued Netflix, the series’ directors and a production company, alleging that the edit of her interview created a false and defamatory story. That lawsuit is an allegation, not a finding.
What Banks says in the documentary
Banks says she was angry because she believed Richardson was giving up after the effort that had gone into getting her onto the show. She recalls that she and her team had wanted Richardson to succeed and had mentored her before she came back to compete.
She also places the outburst beyond the scene itself. In the interview, as The Independent quotes her, she says: “It was probably bigger than her. It was family, friends, society, Black girls, all the challenges that we have.” Her closing admission is the line most often repeated from the series: “I went too far. I lost it.”
The 2005 confrontation
Richardson competed in the fourth cycle of America’s Next Top Model, which aired in 2005. The documentary returns to the moment after her elimination, when Banks scolded her for laughing and joking and then erupted. The outburst included the line that became a widely shared reality-TV meme: “I was rooting for you! We were all rooting for you. How dare you!” The Guardian reports the televised exchange.

The reporting cited here does not include a new statement from Richardson responding to Banks’s remarks in the documentary.
How former colleagues describe the moment
The coverage also includes recollections from people who worked on the show. Former judge Nigel Barker recalled that Banks scared the people on set. Jay Manuel described the outburst as the most difficult moment he had experienced on set and said production staff took Banks off the set afterward. These are personal recollections, not verified accounts of what happened off camera.

The show and the documentary
- Broadcast run: America’s Next Top Model ran from 2003 to 2018 and spanned 24 cycles, according to The Guardian.
- Banks’s role: Banks created and hosted 22 of those cycles, according to The Guardian.
- Retrospective scope: The series is being reassessed for body shaming, race, and treatment of contestants, alongside its history of presenting a wider range of beauty images.
- Format: Reality Check is a three-part Netflix series built from interviews with Banks, contestants, judges and production figures.
- Interview length: According to the Los Angeles Times, the directors said Banks’s interview lasted about four hours.
The lawsuit and what it does and does not establish
The Associated Press reported on June 14, 2026 that Banks sued Netflix, the directors and a production company. She alleges the series edited her interview to create a false and defamatory narrative. Those are claims in a court filing. The reporting cited here does not describe a ruling on them, and this article does not track the case after that report.
