Twisters is a satisfying disaster-spectacle follow-up to the 1996 Twister, and its storm imagery is strong enough to justify a big-screen trip if a large-format screening is available near you. It works as a standalone story rather than a direct continuation. The original characters do not return, but the new storm chasers encounter legacy references, including the Dorothy sensors. Its main strength is scale and momentum. Its main weakness is a screenplay that some reviewers found less compelling than the set pieces.
What the film inherits from the 1996 original
The Associated Press described Twisters as standalone rather than a direct sequel. It follows a new group of storm chasers, and the 1996 film’s characters do not return. The link to the original is mostly in its references, most notably the Dorothy sensors, which the new chasers come across in the field. “Re-quel” is a loose editorial shorthand for this kind of film, not an official genre label, so it is best read as a description of tone rather than a promise about plot continuity.
What the new film adds
Twisters is directed by Lee Isaac Chung and stars Daisy Edgar-Jones, Glen Powell, and Anthony Ramos. Its premise is set in the present day, and the production leans on contemporary tornado science rather than only recreating the 1996 storm-chasing world.
NBCUniversal’s production feature says tornado experts joined the cast and crew as advisers, and it names Kevin Kelleher, former director of the National Severe Storms Laboratory, as a technical consultant on both films. That consultation grounds the film’s science, but it does not make every fictional event or method scientifically exact. Treat the storm behavior as dramatized.

Chung also spoke about the film’s hope for its audience. In a quote published by NBCUniversal, he said: “The first film inspired so many people to get into weather science and research. I would love if that would happen with this movie and inspire the next generation of scientists.” That is his stated hope, not a measured outcome. No independent study of the film’s effect on interest in weather science was identified for this review.
Where the spectacle works
The Atlantic’s David Sims calls the film an old-school, loud, fast-paced spectacle, and that is the clearest case for seeing it at scale. A Rotten Tomatoes-hosted review excerpt puts the appeal this way: “It’s like you’re chasing tornados from the front seat of a roller coaster.” Audience comments in the same places are often brief and enthusiastic, such as “Really fun summer movie,” but these are individual reactions rather than a representative measure of how viewers feel.

The film’s momentum is its best argument. Set pieces arrive quickly, and the tornado sequences are the reason to choose a theater over a laptop.
Where it falls short
The Atlantic notes that the film uses a broadly similar template to earlier disaster films, though Chung’s rural-American sensibility shapes its setting and characters. Some reviewers found the writing less engaging than the spectacle, and that criticism appears alongside the praise in the same review excerpts. If you are looking for character depth or a story that feels fresh beyond its storms, expect a more mixed experience.

Is it worth the big screen?
The Atlantic review is headlined “Please See ‘Twisters’ in Theaters.” Sims writes that viewers go for the tornadoes, and he recommends IMAX or 4DX where available. Home viewing
Universal Pictures Home Entertainment announced Digital availability for October 8, 2024, and 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD street dates for October 22, 2024. The 4K UHD edition lists a 2.39:1 widescreen presentation, Dolby Atmos feature audio, and a runtime of 2:02:05. Listed extras include deleted scenes, a gag reel, production and effects features, storm-chaser material, and a feature commentary by Lee Isaac Chung. These are 2024 release details, so confirm the current edition and retailer listing before buying.
Home viewing is a reasonable option if the big-screen run has passed. The storm sequences still work on a large living-room display, though the 4DX seat motion and water effects are not reproduced at home.
Who should see it
- Viewers who want large-scale weather spectacle and do not need a tightly written story.
- Fans of the 1996 Twister who are happy with a standalone film that only nods to the original.
- Anyone curious about how contemporary tornado science was brought into the production through its consultants.
Viewers who want a tightly written drama, or who expect the original characters to return, should adjust expectations first.
