Tyler, the Creator released the self-directed “Thought I Was Dead” video on October 26, 2024, two days before CHROMAKOPIA was scheduled to arrive. The track became part of the album, though the digital listing and a later CD edition differ in track count.
When did the “Thought I Was Dead” video come out?
The video premiered on October 26, 2024, ahead of CHROMAKOPIA’s October 28 release. Pitchfork described it as self-directed by Tyler Okonma and as another preview of the approaching album. The clip followed videos for “ST. CHROMA” and “Noid,” along with promotional videos for the vinyl LP and tour. Pitchfork reported on the video.
How did the video fit the album rollout?
“Thought I Was Dead” arrived during a compact campaign for the album. Sony Music Poland announced CHROMAKOPIA on October 18 as the follow-up to 2021’s CALL ME IF YOU GET LOST, set for October 28 via Columbia Records, with physical versions available for preorder. Sony Music Canada later described a 12-day span from the “ST. CHROMA” video to the album reveal, including the “Noid” single and video. The album was released October 28 through Columbia Records. Sony Music Poland’s announcement and Sony Music Canada’s release announcement document the label’s timeline.
Is “Thought I Was Dead” on CHROMAKOPIA?
Yes. It appears on the album. The edition matters when checking the tracklist: Apple Music’s U.S. digital listing identifies the 2024 hip-hop/rap release as 14 songs with a 53-minute runtime. Apple Music’s album listing provides those digital-format details.

The later CD tracklist is different
Sony Music Italy lists a CD edition released October 31, 2025, with 15 tracks. In that edition, “Thought I Was Dead” is track 11 and features ScHoolboy Q and Santigold; the tracklist also includes “Mother.” The store page describes a gatefold package, embossed details and a 20-page booklet. These specifications apply to that listed CD edition, not automatically to other formats or territories. Sony Music Italy’s CD listing shows its format and track order.
What does the song sound like, and what has Tyler said?
The Associated Press review characterizes “Thought I Was Dead” as brash and bass-heavy, placing it within an album that explores anxieties around age and fame. That is critical framing, not a confirmed explanation from Tyler of the song’s meaning. At a listening party in Inglewood, California, Tyler said, “I just wanted to write about stuff I think about when I’m dolo,” AP reported; it explains “dolo” as shorthand for “solo dolo,” meaning by himself. AP’s Leslie Ambriz reviewed the album.
