On May 19, 2025, Donald Trump said he would call for a “major investigation” into whether Bruce Springsteen and other celebrities were improperly paid for supporting Kamala Harris. The reports documenting his statement do not establish that an agency opened an investigation, that Springsteen received such a payment, or that anyone broke campaign-finance law.
What did Trump accuse Springsteen of?
Trump questioned whether the Harris campaign had paid Springsteen for his support during the 2024 presidential campaign. In a Truth Social post quoted by the Associated Press, he wrote: “HOW MUCH DID KAMALA HARRIS PAY BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN FOR HIS POOR PERFORMANCE DURING HER CAMPAIGN FOR PRESIDENT?” He framed the question as a possible issue involving illegal payments or campaign contributions, but the reporting by the Associated Press and the Los Angeles Times said he did not provide evidence for the allegation in those posts. The question is an accusation, not proof that a payment occurred or that a law was broken. Associated Press, May 20, 2025; Los Angeles Times, May 19, 2025.

Why did Trump single him out?
The call followed a public clash. At the opening of his European tour in Manchester, England, Springsteen criticized Trump’s administration from the stage. He said the America he loved was “currently in the hands of a corrupt, incompetent and treasonous administration.” The Associated Press and Los Angeles Times placed Trump’s attack and investigation call in the aftermath of those remarks. Associated Press; Los Angeles Times.
Trump’s post named Springsteen while referring more broadly to celebrities who supported Harris. The immediate context reported by those outlets was the dispute over Springsteen’s political criticism; it does not, by itself, establish a financial arrangement between the singer and the campaign.

Was there an official investigation?
The reporting documents Trump’s public call for a major investigation. It does not establish that a government agency opened a case or that Springsteen was formally investigated. A public demand from a president and an agency’s investigative action are different things.
The FBI’s general explanation of its authority says it can investigate federal crimes under applicable authorities. That description does not show that the FBI investigated this allegation. No formal agency notice or case record confirming an investigation is established by the cited reporting and agency information. FBI official FAQ.
What is known about Springsteen’s response?
Springsteen’s Manchester remarks preceded Trump’s May 19, 2025 call. Two days later, the Associated Press reported that Springsteen released a digital EP featuring four live recordings from Manchester and two addresses to the audience in which he criticized the administration. That is documented follow-up to his concert remarks, not evidence about whether an agency acted on Trump’s call. Associated Press, May 21, 2025.
How do later remarks fit in?
Springsteen continued criticizing Trump in a separate event at a Washington concert on May 27, 2026. Le Monde reported that he said the country’s democracy, constitution, and rule of law were being challenged by a “reckless, racist, incompetent, treasonous president and his ship of fools administration.” These later remarks add context to their continuing political feud; they do not confirm that an investigation followed the 2025 call. Le Monde, May 29, 2026.
