In August 2023, Trista and Ryan Sutter were preparing to move from Vail to Denver before the new school year began. Both children were set to attend new schools. The family described the change as an opportunity, but Trista also acknowledged uncertainty about leaving the close-knit Vail Valley community.
Why the Sutter family moved from Vail to Denver
A TV Shows Ace report published August 7, 2023, said the family planned to make the move before school began in mid-August. Trista described the decision as a chance for each family member to benefit: Ryan would be closer to work, while the children could have more academic and athletic opportunities. She also said she was thinking about starting a business.
In the same report, Trista summed up the family’s reasoning with the word “Opportunity” and said they had loved their 20 years in the mountains. The move kept the family in Colorado, but exchanged life in Vail for a city setting in Denver. TV Shows Ace’s August 7, 2023 report attributed those comments to Trista.
How the children figured into the school change
Both children were expected to start at new schools after the move. According to TV Shows Ace, son Max was the first to raise the possibility of changing schools, and the family discussed the decision together. Trista’s reported “#youdoyou” comment recognized that moving might not be the right choice for every teenager; it did not mean the transition would be simple for every child.

Trista’s mixed feelings about leaving Vail
The practical possibilities of Denver came with uncertainty about whether the family would fit in, make friends and enjoy city life. In an Instagram-caption excerpt reproduced by Yahoo News in a republication of People coverage, Trista wrote: “We all miss our Vail Valley friends and our small mountain town community but we are gradually finding our way and our Denver people.” The reflection describes adjustment as a process, alongside the loss of familiar friends and community. Yahoo News reproduced the excerpt; the page’s publication date was not confirmed in the available reporting.
A past transition, not a current school-year update
The move and new-school plans belong to 2023. In a separate report published August 15, 2025, E! News described Maxwell as entering his senior year and Blakesley her junior year. That later update provides context for how much time had passed; it does not make the Denver move a current event. E!’s 2025 report gives the dated school-stage update.
