Who was Neeraj?
Neeraj was the pen name of Gopaldas Saxena, a poet and lyricist whose work moved between Hindi literature, Urdu writing and popular Hindi cinema. The Rajya Sabha’s obituary reference records that he was born in January 1925 in Etawah district, Uttar Pradesh, and died on 19 July 2018, aged 93. Hindwi gives his birth date as 4 January 1925 and identifies his birthplace as Purawali village in Etawah district.

He began his career as a Hindi professor at Dharma Samaj College in Aligarh. His path also included postgraduate study in Hindi, poetry gatherings and work in Hindi cinema, according to Hindwi’s biographical account.
Poetry and collections
Neeraj’s literary work included poetry collections as well as film lyrics. Hindwi identifies Sangharsh (1944) as his first poetry collection and lists several later works.

The title poem “कारवां गुजर गया” (“Karvan Gujar Gaya”) is singled out in the Rajya Sabha record as a memorable work. A publisher page lists Neeraj Ki Paati; it establishes the book’s publication, not its current availability.
Neeraj’s Hindi film songs
Neeraj wrote popular Hindi film lyrics, particularly associated with songs from the 1960s and 1970s. Rekhta’s profile names songs including:
- “कारवां गुजर गया” (“Kaarvan Guzar Gaya”)
- “लिखे जो ख़त तुझे” (“Likhe Jo Khat Tujhe”)
- “शोखियों में घोला जाए” (“Shokhiyon Mein Ghola Jaye”)
- “ऐ भाई, ज़रा देख के चलो” (“Ae Bhai, Zara Dekh Ke Chalo”)
The range of these works helps explain why Neeraj is remembered both as a poet and as a lyricist: his name belongs to literary collections as well as to songs heard in Hindi cinema.
Awards and recognition
The Rajya Sabha obituary reference records three honours and their years:
- Padma Shri, 1991
- Yash Bharti Samman, 1994
- Padma Bhushan, 2007
The Chairman of the Rajya Sabha described the national honours as recognition for Neeraj’s “outstanding contribution to Hindi and Urdu poetry.” The same obituary remembered him as an eminent poet and popular lyricist.

Neeraj’s career connected Hindi and Urdu poetry with the reach of film music. His poems and lyrics remain the clearest way to encounter that breadth: the written collections show his work as a poet, while songs such as “Likhe Jo Khat Tujhe” and “Shokhiyon Mein Ghola Jaye” preserve his words in the Hindi film tradition. The Rajya Sabha’s tribute called his songs evergreen hits—a fitting description of the continuing place his lyrics hold in accounts of Hindi cinema and poetry.
