The claim does not hold up. On Aug. 11, 2024, Donald Trump said Kamala Harris had used AI to fabricate the crowd at her Aug. 7, 2024 rally at Detroit Metropolitan Airport in Romulus, Michigan. Photographs, video, local reporting, and digital-forensics analysis all indicate that a large, real crowd attended. PolitiFact rated the claim “Pants on Fire!”
What Trump claimed
Trump’s claim appeared in a Truth Social post on Aug. 11, 2024. He wrote: “There was nobody at the plane, and she ‘A.I.’d’ it, and showed a massive ‘crowd’ of so-called followers, BUT THEY DIDN’T EXIST!” The image at the center of the dispute showed people waiting for Harris near her plane. The accusation has two parts: that the crowd was never there, and that a photograph of it was altered or generated by AI. The evidence reviewed by fact-checkers addresses both.
What happened at the rally
Harris and her running mate Tim Walz held a campaign rally in a hangar at Detroit Metropolitan Airport on Aug. 7, 2024. Local outlets documented the event on the ground. The Detroit News reported people inside and outside the hangar, and the Detroit Free Press reported that people had lined up hours before the event began. FactCheck.org summarized local coverage, photographs, and videos as documenting thousands of attendees.
The evidence that the crowd was real
The claim can be tested against three separate kinds of evidence: independent documentation of the event, the provenance of the disputed photograph, and forensic analysis of that photograph. Each answers a different question, so they are treated separately below.

Independent photographs, video, and reporting
The strongest point is that the crowd does not depend on one image. Multiple photographs and videos show the same basic scene, and local reporting describes people in and around the hangar. PolitiFact published its ruling on the claim with the corroborating images from the event. For an AI-fabrication claim to be true, every one of these independent sources would have to be fake, which is why fact-checkers focused on the wider record rather than the single disputed picture.
Where the disputed photo came from
ABC News reported that a Harris campaign official said a staffer took the photo on an iPhone 12 Pro at 6:28 p.m. on Aug. 7, 2024, and that the image was “not modified by AI in any way.” ABC said it obtained the original image and that its metadata matched the timing of the event. This provenance comes from ABC’s reporting and the campaign official’s account. It is not a published forensic chain-of-custody report, and readers should weigh it as reported testimony that was checked against the file’s metadata.

What the forensic analysis found
Hany Farid, a University of California, Berkeley professor who specializes in digital forensics and image analysis, examined the photo. He said that two detection models he used showed no evidence of AI generation or manipulation, and that multiple other photos and videos show the same basic scene. PolitiFact quoted him as saying there was “no doubt that the photo is real.” Farid’s work is an expert assessment of the image and related media, not a claim that detection tools are infallible; detectors give probabilistic signals, which is why the metadata and the independent corroboration matter alongside them.
Why the empty plane reflection does not prove the crowd was absent
Trump’s “nobody at the plane” framing rests partly on the idea that a crowd should be visible in the aircraft’s reflective surface. FactCheck.org reported Farid’s explanation that the geometry of the plane, the crowd, and the camera means a crowd would appear only as a small sliver in the reflection, if at all. Lead Stories made a similar point: the reflection depends on the angle of the shiny surface. A missing reflection therefore says little about whether people stood in front of the aircraft at the moment the photo was taken.

The 15,000 attendance figure
The Harris campaign touted attendance of more than 15,000. ABC News reported this as a campaign estimate. WDIV said it could confirm several thousand people at the event but did not count 15,000 attendees. The figure should therefore be read as the campaign’s own number, not an audited headcount. The question that matters for Trump’s claim is whether a large crowd existed at all, and the reporting answers that yes without needing the exact count.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the reporting does not establish
- The exact number of attendees. The reporting confirms a large crowd, but the 15,000 estimate is unverified and no independent count was published in the cited coverage.
- A full forensic audit of every image from the event. The expert analysis covers the disputed photograph and the related media it was compared against.
- Anything after August 2024. The fact-checks and statements cited here were published on or around Aug. 12–13, 2024, and do not address later developments in the claim.
What the record does establish is narrower but firm: the Aug. 7, 2024 Detroit-area rally drew a large, real crowd, and the contested photograph has provenance and forensic support that contradicts the AI-fabrication allegation.
