The Jan. 17, 2025 edition of NYT Strands (Puzzle #320) is themed “The time of our lives,” and its spangram is GENERATIONGAP. This is a historical archive entry: the puzzle was published on Jan. 17, 2025, so the answers below apply to that edition only and not to any current daily puzzle. Read in order, the hints move from a light nudge to the full answer set, so you can stop as soon as you have enough.
Step 1: The theme nudge
The clue that points to the theme is “Talkin’ about my…” If that phrase is enough to get you thinking about how people are grouped by when they were born, you already have the idea behind the whole board.
Step 2: Use the hint mechanic
Coverage of this edition describes a hint feature: find any three words of four or more letters, and the game reveals one theme-word hint. The guide that reported this mechanic describes it as a feature of the game, not an official rule document, so treat the exact behavior as the guide’s account. Any three valid words will do; you do not need a particular set.
Step 3: Find the spangram (spoiler)
Spoiler warning: the spangram for this edition is GENERATIONGAP. The NewsATW guide, dated Jan. 17, 2025, says to start with the G at the far left of the top row and wind down the board. Once you have it, the theme is confirmed and the five other words will be easier to spot.

Step 4: The non-spangram answers (full spoiler)
Full answer list below. The five theme words are generational labels, which is what the spangram makes explicit:
- ALPHA
- BOOMER
- MILLENNIAL
- ZOOMER
- GREATEST
Analytics Insight published a guide dated Jan. 17, 2025 that agrees with the theme, the spangram and this five-word list.

Example hint words (spoiler-light)
If you want to see how the hint mechanic plays out, the NewsATW guide’s author used MORE, MOTE, TREAT, TAME, TAMER, BOOM, PETS, TANG, STEP and MOAN as examples. These are illustrations of the kind of words that qualify, not a required list, and none of them is a theme answer.

What the sources cover and what they do not
Both guides cited here, NewsATW and Analytics Insight, date their coverage to Jan. 17, 2025 and agree on the theme, spangram and answer list. Neither guide supplies official NYT rules beyond the hint mechanic described above, and neither provides statistics about how many players solved the puzzle. Where this article describes game behavior, it reflects those secondary guides.
