Contemporary coverage described it as a gesture toward Taylor Swift’s suite, but Kelce later said he was trying to “spread the love,” and a fan-video angle reported by Sports Illustrated showed him facing the Bills fans. The exact intended recipient is therefore less certain than the moment’s viral interpretation.
When did Kelce make the heart hands?
The gesture came after Kelce caught a 22-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter of the AFC divisional playoff game in Buffalo. The Chiefs went on to win 27–24. Kelce scored a second touchdown later in the game, but the heart-hand moment followed the first score. The Associated Press’s contemporaneous game report described the celebration as directed toward Swift’s suite, where she was watching.
Was the gesture meant for Taylor Swift?
That was the immediate interpretation in some coverage, including the AP report. Three days after the game, Kelce offered a different explanation while speaking with his brother Jason on the podcast New Heights. As quoted by Sports Illustrated, he said: “Yeah man, had to spread the love, baby! You always gotta spread that love, baby.” He also referred to the hostility the Chiefs had encountered from the Buffalo crowd. SI reported that a fan’s camera angle showed Kelce facing the Bills fans’ section when he made the gesture.
Those accounts do not establish a definitive recipient. The AP’s description captures how the celebration was understood at the time; Kelce’s later words and the fan-video angle support reading it as a gesture to the crowd. It is safest to distinguish the popular Swift interpretation from Kelce’s own stated reason rather than claim he certainly directed the heart toward her.

What do the heart hands mean?
Taylor Swift has described the heart-hand symbol in general terms. WRTV reported her 2011 explanation: “The heart-hand symbol means something between ‘I love you’ and ‘thank you.’” That statement explains Swift’s use of the gesture; it does not confirm Kelce’s intent during this particular celebration.

- Visible in the moment: Kelce celebrated his touchdown with a heart-hand gesture during the Jan. 21, 2024 game.
- Reported about the game: Swift was in a suite, and the AP’s immediate account said the gesture was directed toward it.
- Kelce’s later explanation: He said he wanted to spread love; a fan-video angle cited by SI showed him facing Bills fans.
- Not settled by the gesture alone: The footage and accounts do not conclusively identify a single intended recipient.
A Taylor Swift Little Golden Book has also been reported to feature her heart-hand gesture on its cover. That is a separate reference to Swift’s familiar symbol, not documentation of Kelce’s celebration or evidence about whom he meant to address.
