Anthea Bell and Derek Hockridge did not translate Asterix joke by joke in a literal sense. Their English adaptation often had to replace the French wordplay with a different joke that preserved the scene’s comic effect, character voice and timing—and fit the speech bubble already drawn around the French text. Bell and Hockridge began the English work in 1969, but the available accounts describe Bell’s approach far more fully than they document how the pair divided individual gags.
Why Asterix’s English jokes are often not literal translations
A pun can depend on the sound of a French word, a French expression or a cultural reference that does not travel cleanly into English. A word-for-word translation may preserve the dictionary meaning while losing the laugh. Bell’s answer was to be flexible with wording in order to remain faithful to the original’s tone and effect. In a 2013 interview, she put it simply: “You have to be quite free.” The Guardian’s interview with Bell discusses her search for the original’s tone of voice.
That freedom is not a license to make a gag unrelated to the French scene. It is a practical way to keep the humor working for English readers when the original mechanism—a sound-alike, idiom or reference—cannot survive the change of language. A 2009 Guardian feature also describes the challenge of carrying the series’ humor across cultures.
How the translated names work
Character names make the strategy easy to see: they are part of the comedy, not labels that must retain the French spelling.

| French name | English name | What the English version does |
|---|---|---|
| Idéfix | Dogmatix | Creates a compact English-language joke for the dog’s name. |
| Panoramix | Getafix | Turns the druid’s name into English wordplay. Bell explained that she had in mind getting a fix on the stars, rather than the drug-related association some readers might hear. |
These examples are creative adaptations, not literal translations. Bell discussed the names and her reasoning in the 2013 interview; a Guardian review likewise treats names such as Dogmatix as evidence of the English translators’ inventive approach. Neither example establishes who wrote each specific name or gag: the English albums credit Bell and Derek Hockridge together.
When a cultural reference needs a new route
Some jokes pose a choice between keeping a reference that may be obscure and finding a different one an English reader can recognize. Bell described considering a football-transfer joke in place of an obscure French term connected with transfer images for the Picts album. She also discussed a recurring song-lyric gag, including a possible Coleridge reference, and noted that copyright constrained some lyric choices. These examples show a translator weighing legibility and comic effect in context; they do not mean every French reference should be replaced with a British one. Bell’s interview sets out those choices.

Why speech bubbles constrain the translation
The English text had to fit artwork already designed around French wording. As an interview with Bell explains, the bubbles were drawn for the French text, so a much longer or shorter English line could disrupt the fit and appearance. Bell’s choices therefore involved comparing the length of possible lines as well as their meaning.
This makes comic translation a joint problem of language and page design. A prose translator may sometimes explain a reference or expand a sentence; a comic translator has a fixed visual space, and the line must land at the right moment in the panel. A replacement joke has to work verbally while respecting the art and the reader’s pacing.

What is known about Bell and Hockridge’s collaboration
The Guardian reports that Bell began translating Asterix in 1969 with Derek Hockridge, eight years after the French books first appeared. Macmillan’s biographical entry also credits Hockridge as her co-translator on the series. The shared credit is clear; the available accounts do not reliably assign particular puns or names to one translator. Bell’s comments about her method should therefore be attributed to Bell, while the English adaptation as a whole is credited to Bell and Hockridge.

For a direct comparison, read an English album alongside the French text: the names, replacement wordplay and line lengths are easier to appreciate on the page than in a list of examples. Hachette UK lists Asterix the Gaul with Bell and Hockridge credited for the English adaptation. Editions can differ, so check the translator credit on the specific edition you choose.
