Trap is a diverting, deliberately heightened thriller—and a middle-of-the-pack M. Night Shyamalan film. Josh Hartnett’s performance and the knowingly playful tone give it personality, but implausible plotting and uneven momentum keep the movie from reaching the director’s best work. Whether that balance works for you depends on how much credibility you need from a suspense story.
What is Trap about?
Written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan, Trap (2024) follows Cooper, played by Josh Hartnett, on a concert outing with his teenage daughter Riley (Ariel Donoghue). The headliner is Lady Raven (Saleka Shyamalan), and the venue becomes the setting for a police operation aimed at catching a notorious serial killer. That father-daughter setup collides with a cat-and-mouse thriller without requiring the film’s later turns to be spoiled.

Shyamalan pitched the premise as, “What if The Silence of the Lambs happened at a Taylor Swift concert?” as reported by The Atlantic. The pop-concert spectacle is not just scenery: it supplies the film with a crowded, highly managed environment in which suspense and performance sit side by side.
What works: Hartnett and the movie’s playful streak
Hartnett is the central reason to give the film a chance. Cooper has to register as both a father in a public family outing and the focus of a serial-killer thriller; Hartnett’s performance gives that tension a human center. The film also embraces a heightened, sometimes knowingly silly tone rather than playing every beat as grim realism.

TIME critic Stephanie Zacharek calls the film’s quality “amiable goofiness.” That phrase captures its appeal for viewers willing to enjoy the spectacle and suspense without demanding that every element behave plausibly. Zacharek’s TIME review places it in the murky middle of Shyamalan’s work: neither his worst nor his best.
Where the thriller loses ground
The same looseness that gives Trap its playful energy can make its story hard to believe. Zacharek points to numerous implausibilities, and that is the principal obstacle for viewers who want a tightly engineered thriller. The setup is an effective hook, but the film’s direction and momentum do not satisfy every critic: review summaries collected by Metacritic include complaints that the serial-killer characterization is muddled or that the movie loses steam after its premise is established.
Rank #2
The concert setting is a matter of taste, too. Its pop spectacle helps distinguish the movie from a conventional pursuit story; for some viewers, the concert material will instead interrupt the thriller’s forward drive. These are connected trade-offs, not separate defects: the film is most enjoyable when its audience accepts the tonal shifts and the world’s heightened logic.

The mixed reception fits the film’s split appeal: its premise, casting and eccentric tone work for some, while credibility and pacing are sticking points for others. Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Trap right for you?
- Try it if: you enjoy Hartnett’s performance, unusual thriller premises, pop spectacle, and suspense with a deliberately over-the-top comic edge.
- Approach cautiously if: implausibilities quickly break immersion for you, or you prefer a thriller whose setup sustains a consistent pace and tone.
- For a Shyamalan ranking: “mid-tier” is a critical judgment, not an objective placement. It is a fair shorthand for a film with a memorable hook and personality that also has conspicuous weaknesses.

For the UK home-entertainment version, the BBFC lists “strong threat, brief violence”; its advice also flags language and flashing or flickering images, which may affect viewers susceptible to photosensitive epilepsy. This is a UK classification, not a universal rating. The US Rotten Tomatoes listing gives the film a PG-13 rating for some violent content and brief strong language.
