How the Toy Story films compare
The top three entries are the franchise’s third, fourth, and fifth films. Their close ordering is clearer in The Numbers’ separate franchise table, which reports precise worldwide totals: Toy Story 4 at $1,071,177,215 and Toy Story 3 at $1,068,879,522, a difference of about $2.3 million. That small lead should not be treated as fixed across databases, which may revise historical totals differently.

The Numbers reports Toy Story 5 at $1,148,032,149, Toy Story 2 at $511,358,276, and the original Toy Story at $375,455,048. These more precise figures are a cross-check, not substitutes for the consistently rounded Box Office Watch ranking above. See The Numbers’ Toy Story franchise table.
Associated Press reported that the Toy Story films had collectively generated more than $3 billion in theatrical grosses before Toy Story 5 launched; that is a pre-fifth-film figure, not a current franchise total. AP also described Hanks returning as Woody in the fifth film. Its report notes billions in franchise merchandising before that launch, a separate category from theatrical box office. Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What these grosses do—and don’t—measure
A worldwide theatrical gross is the reported box-office revenue from cinema exhibition across markets. It is not the amount Hanks personally received, a film’s net profit, or a measure of how many tickets it sold. These rankings are nominal rather than adjusted for inflation; the cited tables do not provide an inflation-adjusted ranking or a comparable admissions series.
Actor-wide box-office totals require special care. The Numbers’ leading-role chart gives Hanks $12,087,827,017 across 61 movies, but its methodology counts a film’s full box office for every performer classified as a leading performer, including ensemble casts. That chart total is neither Hanks’ income nor a measure of grosses caused solely by his presence. See The Numbers’ Tom Hanks chart.
Figures can shift because of re-releases and database corrections. Box Office Watch supplies the ordered Hanks-specific ranking used here; The Numbers supplies a useful, more precise cross-check for Toy Story films. Box Office Mojo also identifies Hanks as Woody in the original film’s cast listing. View the Box Office Mojo listing.
