Yes. On November 12, 2025, a three-justice panel of California’s Second District Court of Appeal affirmed Tory Lanez’s three felony convictions in the 2020 shooting case involving Megan Thee Stallion. The court rejected the defense’s claims as grounds for reversal. In February 2026, the California Supreme Court declined to review the case, leaving the convictions in place.
What did the appeals court decide?
The Court of Appeal affirmed Lanez’s convictions. The jury had found him guilty in December 2022 of assault with a semiautomatic firearm, having a loaded, unregistered firearm in a vehicle, and discharging a firearm with gross negligence. Lanez, whose legal name is Daystar Peterson, was sentenced to 10 years in state prison in August 2023. The Associated Press reported the verdict and sentence; NBC Los Angeles also reported the appellate affirmance.
The appeal concerned alleged errors during the trial, not a new jury’s reconsideration of the underlying evidence. Reporting on the opinion describes defense arguments involving Megan Pete’s testimony and willingness to testify, the use of Kelsey Harris’s recorded prior interview, an Instagram comment associated with Lanez’s account, jury instructions, and a photograph of Lanez’s tattoos. The panel found no basis to reverse the convictions.
What was the instructional error?
The appellate court identified an error in an instruction concerning the concealed-firearm-in-a-vehicle count, but found it harmless in light of the record. That distinction matters: the court did not overturn that conviction or order a new trial. Legal affairs reporter Meghann Cuniff’s account details the claims and the court’s treatment of the instructional issue.

What happened after the Court of Appeal ruling?
The Court of Appeal’s November 2025 affirmance and the California Supreme Court’s later decision are separate procedural steps. In February 2026, the state Supreme Court declined the defense petition asking it to review the case, according to KESQ/City News Service. The reported action was a refusal to take up review, not a new merits ruling explaining or reconsidering the evidence.
How did the case reach the appeal?
- July 2020: The shooting occurred. Megan Pete testified that Lanez shot at her feet; that is her testimony about the incident.
- December 2022: A jury convicted Lanez on three felony counts.
- August 2023: Lanez received a 10-year state-prison sentence.
- November 12, 2025: The California Court of Appeal affirmed the convictions.
- February 2026: The California Supreme Court declined the defense petition for review.
What did the opinion say about Kelsey Harris?
Justice Anne H. Egerton, writing for the appellate panel, described Harris’s courtroom testimony this way: “Once on the stand, to say Harris was a reluctant witness is an understatement.” The Associated Press attributed that line to Egerton in its account of the opinion. The court was discussing Harris’s responses during testimony and the prosecution’s use of her earlier recorded interview.
