R-Rated Anime: What the U.S. Rating Means and Which Mature Anime Films to Check

No verified list of seven U.S. R-rated anime exists, so this guide explains what R means, compares rating labels for six recurring titles, and shows how to confirm a rating before you watch or buy.

No current source establishes a verified list of seven U.S. R-rated anime films, so this guide does not offer one. What it offers instead is a curated starting point: six titles that recur in recent critic lists and rating databases, what each label actually says, and how to confirm a U.S. rating before you watch or buy. Treat it as a map of the evidence rather than a ranking.

What “R-rated” means for anime

“R-rated” is a specific U.S. film classification, and it is easy to blur with other labels that look similar. Four distinctions matter:

  • MPA R is a U.S. film rating. Netflix’s maturity-rating guidance describes R as restricted and potentially inappropriate for viewers under 17.
  • TV-MA is a separate television maturity category. A TV-MA label does not mean a title carries an MPA R rating.
  • Not Rated means the listing shows no MPA rating. Adult content can be present in a Not Rated title.
  • Regional ratings such as Netflix’s 16+ vary by country. A streaming page or an older home-video edition may not show the U.S. theatrical rating.

Mature subject matter, graphic violence and sexual content are therefore not a reliable guide to the rating. A film can be very adult in tone and still carry no R label in the database you check.

How these titles were selected

Rotten Tomatoes’ “100 Best Anime Movies of All Time,” updated July 13, 2026, is a critic ranking by Tomatometer score. It covers anime films broadly and is not limited to R-rated titles. Its companion browse page, “R Rated Anime Movies to Stream at Home (2026),” is a discovery filter rather than an editorial top-seven list, and its streaming options change over time. The titles below are the ones that surface across those lists and in IMDb’s search results for anime with ratings. Being on a list here does not confirm a U.S. R rating.

Rating labels for the candidate titles

Title Format Rating label found Where it appears What is not established
Akira Film Not stated in the sources reviewed Rotten Tomatoes all-time guide; R-filtered browse results Exact U.S. edition and its MPA classification
Perfect Blue Film Not Rated (IMDb search results) Rotten Tomatoes all-time guide; R-filtered browse results; IMDb Whether a U.S. MPA rating exists for a given release; the labels conflict
Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust Film R (IMDb search results) IMDb search results Confirmation against a primary rating record for a specific release
Ninja Scroll Film Not stated in the sources reviewed Rotten Tomatoes all-time guide; Wikipedia MPA rating; edition details beyond the reported Blu-ray re-release
Ghost in the Shell Not stated in the sources reviewed TV-MA (IMDb search results) IMDb search results Any MPA R classification; a TV-MA label is not a film rating
Devilman Crybaby Series, ten episodes (Netflix title page) 16+ (Netflix regional title page) Netflix Any U.S. rating; the label applies to the regional page only

Only four of these titles appear across multiple sources. Ghost in the Shell and Devilman Crybaby are included to show where labels diverge, not as R-rated picks.

How to check a title’s U.S. rating

  1. Identify the exact release: title, release year, distributor and edition (theatrical, streaming or a specific Blu-ray).
  2. Look for the MPA rating on the physical case or on the distributor’s product page for that exact edition.
  3. Cross-check a rating database such as IMDb, but open the entry for the specific release, since labels can differ between listings of the same title.
  4. If the only label you find is TV-MA, 16+ or a regional rating, do not count the title as an MPA R film.
  5. Check streaming availability in your region shortly before you watch, because catalogues change.

Physical media and availability

Ninja Scroll on Blu-ray

Wikipedia’s entry for Ninja Scroll reports North American Blu-ray re-releases, including one in January 2025. Before buying, confirm the distributor, the edition and whether it is still in print, and check that the disc’s region coding suits your player. The sources reviewed do not establish the film’s MPA rating, so check the case of the specific edition.

Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust

GKIDS Films announced on August 22, 2026 that it had acquired North American rights to Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust. That announcement does not establish a home-video date, an edition or a streaming window. Check GKIDS’ own release announcements for those details, and treat the IMDb R label as a database entry to confirm against the release you find.
