Anthony Edwards’s heartbreak is about Top Gun’s glorification of the military, not a claim that he regrets playing Goose. Across interviews spanning 1988 to 2022, he has criticized the film’s themes while also recognizing its craft and the lasting effect it had on his career.

What does Edwards say breaks his heart?

In an A.V. Club interview around 2013, Edwards drew a clear distinction between his affection for flying and his objection to the film’s military message. “It’s not that I’m anti-pilot or flying. I love flying. I just got my pilot’s license, in fact. But that kind of glorifying of the military is… it breaks my heart a little bit,” he said. A.V. Club

Edwards played Goose, the Navy pilot and friend of Tom Cruise’s Maverick. His remark is specifically about glorification of the military; it should not be recast as opposition to pilots or flying.

What does he object to in the film’s message?

In a 2004 interview with The Independent, Edwards criticized what he saw as the film’s success-at-any-cost logic. He called it “very objectionable,” saying: “Everything I hate about Hollywood is embodied by that movie. It’s the idea that you have to succeed at any cost. If you have to kill your best friend, that is OK, as long as you are the best fighter pilot. It’s a pure capitalism message gone mad. I guess I’m just an old peacenik, because I don’t believe you solve problems by killing people.” The Independent

That is his interpretation of the story’s values, not a neutral description of every aspect of the film. His criticism connects its competitive plot to a broader objection to treating victory as worth any cost.

Did Edwards regret making Top Gun?

The interviews support a more complicated answer than a simple yes. In 1988, shortly after the film’s release, Edwards acknowledged both its commercial success and his reservations: “It’s always good to be in a film that makes (a fortune), but there are elements to that film that I don’t like.” He also called it “essentially a movie about rationalizing bad behavior,” while saying it “opened the door to other things for me.” Los Angeles Times

In 2022, he again described a gap between the story and his own instincts as an actor: the script did not make him feel the story needed telling, and its glamorization of the military did not fit his upbringing. Yet he also recognized the filmmaking and personal impact: “Look, they did it beautifully and it’s great and it changed my life in a lot of ways, but there’s nothing in there that makes me as actor go, God, yes.” Esquire

Taken together, his remarks show persistent ambivalence: he has sharply criticized the movie’s message, while acknowledging that it was beautifully made and consequential for his career and life. They do not establish that he regrets taking the role.
