This is a shortlist of 14 candidate titles taken from publisher catalogs, not a ranking. No book here was physically tested, and nothing below judges paper, clue quality or how well any puzzle solves. The comparisons rely on what each publisher says about its own product.
How the 14 titles were selected
The list draws on two publisher catalogs (Hachette’s large-print crossword lines and Puzzle King’s adult crossword books) and one independent publisher’s product page (Lay it Flat Publishing Group). Each title was kept because its listing gives enough detail to compare on at least one of five practical points:
- Print size: large print versus extra-large print, and grid size where stated.
- Difficulty: only where the publisher labels a book easy or quick. A title marketed to adults or seniors is not treated as easy on that basis alone.
- Puzzle count: the number the publisher states for that product.
- Page layout and binding: whether puzzles span one or two pages and how the book is bound.
- Edition and region: US or UK versions, where the publisher distinguishes them.
Descriptions in the table and sections below are publisher-supplied product copy. Review figures shown on publisher sites are publisher-hosted feedback, not independent testing.
Which book fits which need
- Largest type: Lay it Flat’s Easy Crossword Puzzle Books For Seniors and Adults – Extra Large Print, then Hachette’s Large Print Crosswords volumes.
- Easiest puzzles: Hachette’s Jumbo Print Easy Crosswords, and Puzzle King’s 48-puzzle large-print paperback, which the publisher describes as easy level.
- Most puzzles in one book: Hachette’s Large Print Crosswords and Jumbo Print Easy #8 at 125 each, then Puzzle King’s 90-puzzle titles.
- UK-style quick crosswords: Puzzle King’s Quick Daily titles, which the catalog labels as UK versions.

Hachette’s large-print lines
Large Print Crosswords (#1, #2, #4)
Hachette’s series description covers large type and generously sized grids, with 125 puzzles per volume. Only the #1 volume has a detailed product description in these listings. Its 125 puzzles each run across two pages, and its spiral binding lets the book lie flat, which helps if you want the page open while you work. The direct store showed #1 as sold out when checked, so confirm stock first. Hachette’s product page reports NAVH approval. That is the publisher’s statement, and this guide does not describe what the approval involves.
Rank #2
Jumbo Print Easy Crosswords (#1, #3, #5, #7, #8)
These five volumes carry Hachette’s easy label and large print. The volumes differ in layout detail. Volume #3 places each puzzle over two pages. Volume #7 gives each grid a full page and its clues a full page, and it includes mini themes. Volume #8 is credited to Matt Gaffney and has 125 puzzles, and volume #1 is credited to Pete Naish. Volume #5 has the least detail, so read its listing closely before ordering.
Puzzle King’s adult titles
48 large-print puzzles at easy level
This US-version paperback has 48 puzzles and is described as easy level. Its title names large print, adults and seniors. The publisher’s page shows a 4.2 out of 5 rating from 88 customer reviews, which is publisher-hosted feedback. The page also links to Amazon UK, so check that listing for current price and edition details.

Puzzle King lists four 90-puzzle books in two pairs. The two US titles are Cross Words Activity Puzzlebook and Puzzlebook II. The two UK titles are Quick Daily Cross Word Activity Books, and they are labeled quick crosswords. The listings for these four do not state print size, binding or difficulty, so compare the pages before you buy. The catalog shows a review signal for the first US title, but its value is not stated in this guide.
Lay it Flat’s extra-large-print book
This book offers 50 puzzles in extra-large print on 8.5 × 11 inch pages, with solutions included. Its title marks it as easy. The publisher states that Crossword 14 in the book was revised in October 2024. When checked, the product page showed no reviews.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Checks before you buy
- Edition and ISBN: Hachette counts are for the series description; confirm the page count and puzzle count on the exact volume you are buying.
- Stock and price: availability changes, and this guide does not give prices. Check the current listing.
- US or UK edition: Puzzle King distinguishes editions by region. Check clue conventions before choosing, because a UK quick-crossword book may be written differently from a US title.
- Reviews: ratings on publisher sites come from the publisher’s own platform. Weigh them accordingly.
What this guide does not claim
The list does not rank these books by quality, and it does not report anyone solving them. It makes no claim that crosswords improve memory, slow cognitive decline or produce any measured health outcome. Where a figure appears, it comes from the publisher named beside it.
