There is no definitive, representative ranking of the 15 most hated Star Wars characters. The list below follows Twinfinite’s editorial ranking, published December 8, 2022—not a poll or measured fandom consensus. Jar Jar Binks is a frequent flashpoint in older polls and commentary, but the available surveys ask different questions and do not establish a universal winner.
What “most hated” means in this list
Dislike of a fictional character can stem from comic relief that feels childish, dialogue or story choices, an antagonist viewers find irritating, or a portrayal that changes in later stories. Those are different reactions, not one measurable quality. Twinfinite’s list reflects its own editorial judgment about fan reactions; it does not publish a transparent scoring method.
The available survey evidence is limited by date, geography, question wording, and who chose to respond. A 2016 YouGov survey asked 1,649 adults in Great Britain which characters they liked most; Jar Jar received 2% of mentions in that question, which is not a hate rating. A separate 2017 poll of 2,200 people, as reported by Deseret News, found that Jar Jar was not the most hated; Supreme Leader Snoke came last on a favorite-character list. Deseret’s own reader poll, by contrast, put Jar Jar first among hated characters, nearly triple the closest competitor, Anakin Skywalker. That reader poll also received 21 responses from people who said they hated no character, and it should not be treated as representative sampling. YouGov’s 2016 results and Deseret News’s account of the polls illustrate why the lists should not be combined into a single ranking.

-
Rose Tico
Rose ranks 4th. Star Wars author Delilah S. Dawson described her as “scrappy and clever and multitalented” but someone who does not see herself as a hero or anyone special. That official StarWars.com interview offers character context, not evidence that audiences agree about her. Read the interview with Dawson.
-
Luke Skywalker in the sequel trilogy
Twinfinite’s number 3 is specifically Luke as portrayed in the sequel trilogy—not Luke across every era of Star Wars storytelling. The distinction matters: criticism can concern a particular version or story direction rather than the entire character’s history.

Jar Jar Binks
Jar Jar is number 2 in Twinfinite’s editorial ranking. He is also the character whose standing varies most visibly across the available material: the YouGov figure records limited mentions as a favorite, not hatred; Deseret’s reported 2017 poll said he was not the most hated; and the newspaper’s own reader poll placed him first among hated characters. None of those results establishes a current, global consensus.
-
Rey
Rey is number 1 in Twinfinite’s 2022 list. This is the outlet’s editorial choice, not proof that she is the most disliked character among Star Wars viewers overall.
Why polls and editorial rankings differ
A ranking of “most hated” might measure direct dislike, low favorability, or a writer’s impression of online discussion. Those are not interchangeable. A poll asking which character people like most cannot be read as a ranking of characters they hate most: someone may simply have a different favorite. A newspaper’s reader poll also reflects the people who chose to participate, while an editorial list reflects its author’s selection and reasoning.
For context, StarWars.com’s retrospective dates The Phantom Menace’s release to May 19, 1999, and identifies Jar Jar as a major computer-generated character. That production context helps explain why he became a memorable point of debate, but it does not measure audience dislike. The official Star Wars Databank is useful for franchise character information, not audience rankings.

Criticize characters, not performers
Negative reactions to a character, a script, or a story direction are not evidence against the actor who performed the role. A character ranking is not a verdict on an actor, and no poll or editorial list can stand in for every fan’s view. The clearest answer to “Who are the most hated Star Wars characters?” is therefore qualified: Twinfinite’s 2022 list puts Rey first and Jar Jar second, while historical polling offers mixed, non-comparable signals rather than a definitive order.
