There is no objective, current ranking of the “most annoying” sportscasters. The clearest documented list is The Spun’s 2016 reader-voted bracket of sports-media personalities. Its Sweet 16 names 16 figures, but the published matchup page does not establish a final 1-to-16 order. The names below are therefore presented as historical bracket entrants, not as a definitive ranking or a measure of broadcast quality.
Who counts as a sportscaster here?
The Spun’s bracket used the broader label “people in sports media,” which includes on-air broadcasters as well as studio and other sports-media personalities. This article keeps the assignment’s familiar “sportscasters” wording while identifying the actual scope: the 16 people who appeared in the Sweet 16 matchups of that 2016 poll. The source does not provide a single ordered top-16 list on that page.
The 16 names in The Spun’s 2016 Sweet 16
These are the eight matchups listed by The Spun on March 21, 2016. Matchup order is preserved; it should not be read as a ranking.
| 2016 Sweet 16 matchup | Names |
|---|---|
| 1 | Stephen A. Smith vs. Curt Schilling |
| 2 | Mark May vs. Dan LeBatard |
| 3 | Bomani Jones vs. Jay Mariotti |
| 4 | Chris Berman vs. Jemele Hill |
| 5 | Skip Bayless vs. Paul Finebaum |
| 6 | Colin Cowherd vs. Mike Francesa |
| 7 | Keith Olbermann vs. Jim Rome |
| 8 | Dick Vitale vs. Doug Gottlieb |
The Spun described the round as the result of another audience-voting stage, writing, “After another round of voting, you all have determined the 16 most annoying people in sports media.” That is the publisher’s characterization of its own bracket, not a finding from a representative survey.

What the poll numbers do—and don’t—show
The Spun reported that its 2016 tournament had received “almost 500,000 votes” after two days, at the round-of-32 stage. The figure indicates substantial participation in that publisher’s bracket, but the cited report does not establish who voted or whether those voters represented sports audiences generally.
The Sweet 16 update also recounted several earlier-round results: Dan LeBatard beat Joe Buck 51%–49%, Skip Bayless beat Mike Greenberg 90%–10%, and Stephen A. Smith beat Mel Kiper 83%–17%. Those are specific bracket match results, not standalone popularity or annoyance ratings.

Why the year and format matter
The 2018 bracket was a separate contest
In a separate 2018 edition, The Spun reported that Jemele Hill beat Stephen A. Smith in the final by 60%–40%, with more than 500,000 votes cast in that year’s bracket. The publication qualified the result as applying “at least according to our bracket this year.” It does not alter the 2016 Sweet 16 or create a combined ranking across years.
The 2024 example was football-specific
In 2024, The Spun again used a 64-person bracket, this time focused on football media and asking readers to choose who they found more annoying in each matchup. That is evidence of a recurring poll format, not a current all-sport ranking.

How to read a list like this
“Annoying” is a viewer reaction, not a stable professional trait. A useful comparison needs to distinguish what kind of role and complaint are being discussed: play-by-play versus color commentary, studio hosting versus radio or podcast work, sport and platform, and reactions to volume, catchphrases, perceived bias, interruptions, or repetition. The cited brackets do not measure those dimensions separately, so they cannot explain why individual voters chose one personality over another.
