Top 10 Miss January Playmates: A History-Based Shortlist

A history-based look at five notable Miss January Playmates—and why the available evidence does not support an objective all-time top ten.

“Miss January” means a Playboy Playmate of the Month featured in a January issue—not a model born in January. Margie Harrison, Miss January 1954, was the first Playmate of the Month. But the available records do not support a defensible, evidence-based list of ten ranked “best” January Playmates. Rather than invent a popularity order or fill gaps with unsupported biographies, this guide identifies the January Playmates whose documented distinctions make them notable and explains what a fuller ranking would need to establish.

What “all time” can—and cannot—mean

A Playmate of the Month was Playboy’s monthly centerfold or gatefold feature. One of the twelve monthly Playmates could later receive the annual Playmate of the Year title, but that award is a separate distinction. The final monthly Playmate was published digitally in December 2020, and the annual title also ended in 2020, according to the reference record.

There is no canonical ranking established here, and no comparable popularity measure was found. A responsible shortlist can instead weigh documented historical milestones, verified awards, and the quality of available evidence. These criteria identify notable January Playmates; they do not prove who was most popular or produce a reliable top-ten order.

January Playmates with documented distinctions

Margie Harrison — Miss January 1954

Harrison is identified as the first Playmate of the Month. That makes her a foundational figure in the feature’s history, rather than simply an early entry in a popularity contest. The reference record supports this distinction.

Connie Kreski — Miss January 1968

Kreski was named Playmate of the Month in January 1968 and later Playmate of the Year for 1969. The verified annual award is a concrete recognition beyond her January appearance, making her one of the strongest candidates for inclusion under an awards-based criterion. The reference record documents both titles.

Liv Lindeland — Miss January 1971

The reference records Lindeland’s January 1971 appearance as a centerfold milestone. Its account does not establish a popularity ranking, so the useful reason to include her is the historical significance attached to that appearance. The reference record supports this limited claim.

Marilyn Cole — Miss January 1972

Cole is identified as the first Playmate with a full-frontal centerfold. This is a historical distinction, not evidence that she outranks other January Playmates in fame or influence. The reference record records the milestone.

Stacy Arthur — Miss January 1991

Arthur is identified as the January 1991 Playmate and a cover subject. Those details support her inclusion in a history-focused shortlist, but the available account does not provide a basis for ranking her against the others. The reference record supports these claims.

Why this is not a ranked top ten

Only five candidates have enough substantiated detail here to explain their relevance, and their distinctions are not directly comparable: being first, receiving an annual award, and being associated with a centerfold milestone measure different things. The available material does not establish equivalent biographical profiles for ten January Playmates or a poll, readership figure, or other common popularity measure. Assigning positions six through ten—or ordering these five as “best”—would suggest evidence that has not been established.

Other January appearances are listed in a collector-card checklist, including Leslie Bianchini (January 1969), Candy Loving (January 1979), Gig Gangel (January 1980), and Suzi Simpson (January 1992). That checklist can point to additional names, but a card listing alone does not establish lasting influence, award status, or comparative standing. The checklist is not a substitute for confirming issue details against Playboy’s archive or reliable contemporary reporting.

How to build a defensible ten-name list

A fuller ranking should verify every candidate’s January issue appearance and then apply the same criteria to each person. Useful evidence would include primary archive records for the issue, verified Playmate of the Year awards, and well-sourced documentation of work or public recognition beyond the pictorial. If the ranking is meant to reflect popularity, it needs a real poll or comparable readership evidence—not a list based on birth months or annual award winners.

The result should state its limits: historical significance and awards can be documented, while “most famous” requires a defined measure and evidence that compares like with like.
