Was Tony Armstrong asked to be The Bachelor? In a report published on 22 June 2022, PerthNow said Armstrong told The Herald Sun that producers may have contacted his management, but the matter never reached him. He also said he could not imagine dating on television, explaining that walking the Logies red carpet made him anxious.
What Tony Armstrong said about The Bachelor
PerthNow’s report of Armstrong’s interview with The Herald Sun quoted him saying: “They (producers) might have got on to my management but it never got to me.”
That is a qualified account of possible contact with his management—not confirmation that Armstrong received or considered a formal offer, or that he rejected the role.
He also said: “I get anxiety just walking down here (the Logie Awards red carpet) so I can’t imagine dating on TV.” The remark was about the prospect of dating on television; it does not establish anything about his relationships or dating life.

Why the rumours surfaced
PerthNow reported that speculation about Armstrong as a potential Bachelor had circulated before Channel 10 selected three men for the role. The rumours picked up again after he announced a break from presenting for an “unspecified project” in May 2022. That link explains the timing of the speculation, but does not establish that the project involved The Bachelor.
The timeline behind the story
- March 2022: ABC Backstory noted calls for Armstrong to appear on The Bachelor. In the same profile, he described the attention as uncomfortable: “It’s very uncomfortable really, I don’t enjoy all that stuff, I find it a bit weird.”
- May 2022: Armstrong announced a break from presenting for an unspecified project, prompting renewed speculation, according to PerthNow.
- 19 June 2022: At the Logie Awards on the Gold Coast, Armstrong received the inaugural Graham Kennedy Award for Best New Talent, PerthNow reported.
- 22 June 2022: PerthNow published its account of his response to the Bachelor rumours.
What the later ABC update does—and does not—show
In September 2024, the ABC announced Armstrong’s departure from News Breakfast, with his final day set for 4 October 2024. The announcement also noted his ongoing ABC work and career history. It is separate background and does not indicate any later Bachelor casting development.
