Tony Bennett died in New York City on July 21, 2023, at age 96. Across a career spanning more than seven decades, he kept interpreting the Great American Songbook with jazz-inflected phrasing while finding new audiences through television, MTV Unplugged and collaborations with younger performers. His career was not one comeback but a series of renewals that connected different eras of American music.
From Astoria to the national stage
Born Anthony Dominick Benedetto in Astoria, Queens, on August 3, 1926, Bennett sang while working as a waiter, studied art and served in the U.S. Army during World War II, where he performed with military bands. His early life joined interests that stayed with him: music, visual art and public service. His official biography recounts that Bob Hope encountered him performing with Pearl Bailey in Greenwich Village in 1949, invited him to appear at the Paramount and gave him the stage name Tony Bennett.

Bennett signed with Columbia Records in 1950. “Because of You” became his first No. 1 hit in 1951, and Hank Williams’s “Cold, Cold Heart” was another early success. These songs established him as a popular singer, but his approach was rooted in interpretation: he shaped a lyric through timing, phrasing and a jazz musician’s sensitivity rather than treating standards as fixed museum pieces. The National Endowment for the Arts’ profile describes “I Left My Heart in San Francisco” as his signature song.
Why “I Left My Heart in San Francisco” became a signature
Bennett recorded “I Left My Heart in San Francisco” in 1962. The following year, it won Grammy Awards for Record of the Year and Best Solo Vocal Performance, Male, according to the Recording Academy. The song gave listeners a lasting point of recognition, but it did not define the limits of his work. Bennett continued exploring jazz arrangements and performing with musicians including Count Basie and pianist Bill Evans, while also recording tributes to Frank Sinatra and Fred Astaire.

The standards remained a through-line as popular music changed around him. Bennett’s own account, quoted by TIME from his 2012 memoir, captured his sense of that continuity: “Yet through the years, every age responds to my singing, even though I haven’t changed a thing.” That consistency was not simply a refusal to change; he kept bringing the material into new settings and to new listeners.
How Bennett reached younger audiences
From concert stages to MTV
Bennett performed before packed audiences during Beatlemania, then reached a new television audience with MTV Unplugged. The performance led to an album that won the Recording Academy’s Album of the Year in 1995. It was a major renewal, but not the only one: the next phase came through carefully chosen collaborations and a renewed effort to introduce his music to younger listeners.

Lady Gaga and a later-generation audience
With his son Danny helping direct outreach to younger listeners, Bennett recorded with artists from different generations and genres. His partnership with Lady Gaga became the most visible example. They made Cheek to Cheek and later Love for Sale, bringing classic jazz standards to listeners who knew Gaga from contemporary pop. The Recording Academy records Bennett’s final Grammy win in 2022 for Love for Sale.
The NEA identifies Cheek to Cheek as the album that made Bennett, at 88, the oldest living performer to have a No. 1 album. That is a historical milestone, not a claim about a current record. His final public concert performances took place at Radio City Music Hall on August 3 and 5, 2021, for his 95th birthday, with Lady Gaga, according to Sony Music Canada.

A legacy beyond the songs
Bennett’s public life also included Army service, support for civil rights and humanitarian causes, and marching with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in Selma. With his wife, he founded arts-education work. He was also a visual artist; the NEA and his official biography connect that practice to a life that was broader than his recording career.
The Recording Academy’s 2023 memorial counts 19 competitive Grammy wins among 41 nominations and lists a separate Lifetime Achievement Award received in 2001. Sony Music Canada describes him as a 20-time Grammy winner because its total includes that special award. Sony also reports that he received two Emmy Awards. The distinction in Grammy totals reflects how the special honor is counted, not a disagreement about his competitive wins.

- Prince designed "Purple Rain" as the project that would make him a superstar, and surprisingly, that is exactly what happened. Simultaneously more focused and ambitious than any of his previous records, "Purple Rain" finds Prince consolidating his funk and R&B roots while moving boldly into pop, rock, and heavy metal with nine superbly crafted songs. Although Prince's songwriting is at a peak, the presence of the Revolution pulls the music into sharper focus, giving it a tougher, more aggressive edge. Even with all of his new, but uncompromising, forays into pop Prince hasn't abandoned funk. Taken together, all of the stylistic experiments add up to a stunning statement of purpo
Bennett was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2016, according to Sony Music Canada. He died in New York City on July 21, 2023; the sources cited here do not establish a cause of death. When asked how he wanted to be remembered, he would often say, “As a nice person,” Sony reports.
