The Nintendo Switch game launched April 16, 2026, and Nintendo says it is also playable on Nintendo Switch 2.
What kind of game is Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream?
You create Mii characters inspired by family, friends, or people you invent, then place them on an island and customize their personalities and living spaces. The residents interact, form relationships, and bring you their problems. Nintendo says time in the game passes at the same pace as real life, encouraging players to check in regularly. Nintendo’s game page describes that setup; it is the publisher’s description rather than an independent assessment.
The appeal is largely observational: you shape the cast and setting, then see what happens. It is a social sandbox built around character interactions, not a simulation in which you continuously direct every resident’s routine.
What do reviews praise?
Across the selected reviews, the recurring strengths are character customization, humor, and unpredictable interactions. Nintendo Life reviewer Alana Hagues highlights the detailed Mii creator and the fun of seeing island residents behave in unexpected ways. Game Informer reviewer Brian Shea also emphasizes the distinctive island each player creates and the characters’ strange, voiced exchanges. TechRadar reviewer Dashiell Wood praises the customization and comedy.

#1 Best Overall
- Populate your island with Mii characters and watch them come to life
- Base your Mii characters on family and friends, or whatever you want—and customizer, including some face customization options you haven’t seen before
- Pick your Mii characters up and place them near each other to chat and hang out
- Help your Mii characters explore likes and dislikes, find relationships, and get up to all sorts of fun
- Give Mii characters clothes, food, items, and life advice as they deal with all kinds of situations
Wood’s TechRadar verdict calls it “a delight, with superb character customization and plenty of charming humor.” That is one reviewer’s judgment, not a guarantee that its jokes will land for every player.
What are the main drawbacks?
The game is hands-off
The clearest fit warning is the limited degree of direct control. Nintendo Life describes Miis as living their own lives, and TechRadar advises against the game for people looking for a hands-on life simulation. If you want to manage routines, pursue a tightly structured set of goals, or steer every interaction, this loop may feel too passive.

Some features may disappoint
Game Informer reviewer Brian Shea criticizes the lack of meaningful social features. TechRadar reviewer Dashiell Wood points to limited touchscreen support and the absence of a dedicated Switch 2 version. These are specific reviewers’ criticisms, not omissions every outlet treats as equally important.
Does it run on Nintendo Switch 2?
Yes. Nintendo says the Switch release is playable on Switch 2. That means backward-compatible play, not a dedicated Switch 2 edition: the cited reviews concern the Switch software played on Switch 2. Nintendo announced the game for Switch with an April 16, 2026 launch date. Nintendo’s announcement gives the release details.

Who is it worth playing for?
- Consider it if making Miis, customizing an island, and dropping in to discover comic surprises sounds more appealing than directing a detailed simulation.
- Be cautious if you want constant hands-on control, strongly structured objectives, or social features that let you meaningfully engage with other players.
The reviews agree most on the game’s unusual customization and humor, but they stress different considerations: TechRadar is enthusiastic about its distinctive appeal, while Game Informer gives more weight to the social-feature gap. Those differences make the best buying judgment a matter of what you want from the play loop, rather than a single score or consensus number.
