The Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream Welcome Version is a progression-limited demo, not a documented timed lockout. Nintendo confirms that players can complete it, create up to three Mii characters, earn a Hamster Costume, and transfer demo save data to the full game upon purchase. But Nintendo’s official pages do not specify the exact event that ends the demo or which activities remain available afterward.
What Nintendo confirms about the demo
Nintendo’s official product listing says the Welcome Version can be completed and allows players to create up to three Mii characters. Completing it awards a Hamster Costume. The listing also says demo save data carries over to the full game upon purchase, so players can continue with their island rather than begin from scratch.
Nintendo says the Hamster Costume is also available through regular play in the main game. That makes it a completion reward for the demo, but not an exclusive item obtainable only by finishing the trial version.
What “stopping you from playing indefinitely” means
The official listing establishes that the demo has an endpoint, but does not describe the precise in-game event or sequence that triggers it. It also does not provide a definitive list of activities that remain playable once the demo is complete. So the joke in the title is best understood as a reference to a progression limit—not evidence that the game cuts players off after a set number of minutes or hours.

- Populate your island with Mii characters and watch them come to life
- Base your Mii characters on family and friends, or whatever you want—and customizer, including some face customization options you haven’t seen before
- Pick your Mii characters up and place them near each other to chat and hang out
- Help your Mii characters explore likes and dislikes, find relationships, and get up to all sorts of fun
- Give Mii characters clothes, food, items, and life advice as they deal with all kinds of situations
Without an official description of the post-completion state, claims about exactly what players can keep doing would go beyond what Nintendo has documented.
A separate software-closing issue Nintendo fixed
Nintendo Support documented a specific issue in which the software could close after the demo’s end if a player launched or resumed it from sleep between 9:00 PM and 10:00 AM. Nintendo says an update resolved that issue. In its support article, Nintendo stated: “Save data was not affected, and there is no problem transferring data to the retail version.” That assurance refers to the identified software-closing issue, not every possible transfer scenario.

This bug is distinct from the demo’s intended endpoint: it was a software issue under a particular time and resume condition, not the mechanism that limits the trial.

The decision mainly comes down to whether you want to continue your island and whether the demo’s reward is a draw. Nintendo says the Welcome Version save transfers to the full game when you purchase it, while the Hamster Costume can also be obtained through regular play there.

Nintendo describes the main game as supporting TV, tabletop, and handheld play. Its Australia support FAQ notes that compatibility and play experience may differ on Nintendo Switch Lite. Nintendo’s listing does not establish that a separate accessory is required.
