Tom Hiddleston’s spy thriller is The Night Manager, a six-episode adaptation of John le Carré’s novel that follows a hotel manager recruited to infiltrate an arms dealer’s circle. Whether it is an “overlooked masterpiece” is a matter of taste; its sharp performances, moral tension and awards make a strong case for watching it. Season two, released in 2026, continues the story beyond the book.

What is The Night Manager about?

Hiddleston plays Jonathan Pine, a former British soldier working in hotels when intelligence operative Angela Burr recruits him for an undercover operation. Pine enters the orbit of Richard Onslow Roper, an international businessman whose wealth and influence are tied to the secret arms trade. To stay close to Roper, Pine must win the confidence of his circle while managing suspicion from Roper’s chief of staff and the risks of his connection to Roper’s girlfriend, Jed.

The result is espionage built around proximity and deception rather than a parade of action set pieces. Pine’s assignment puts his cover, loyalties and moral judgment under pressure. The official synopsis describes the story in terms of love, loss, revenge and modern criminality—useful clues to its emotional focus as well as its conspiracy plot.

What makes the first season worth watching?

A compact, novel-based story

The first season adapts le Carré’s 1993 novel into six episodes. AMC described the television version as a contemporary interpretation. Its concise format gives the infiltration plot a defined arc, rather than asking viewers to follow a sprawling multi-season conspiracy from the outset. The official season page lists Susanne Bier as director, David Farr as screenwriter and le Carré as writer.

A cast built around clashing power and trust

Hiddleston’s Pine is surrounded by a strong ensemble: Hugh Laurie plays Roper, Olivia Colman plays Angela Burr, Tom Hollander plays Roper’s chief of staff, and Elizabeth Debicki plays Jed. The premise depends on who trusts whom, and the cast gives that shifting balance its human stakes.

Style in service of suspense

Bier’s direction and the series’ international setting lend the thriller a polished, controlled feel. The visual refinement is not a substitute for tension: it makes Pine’s careful performance inside Roper’s world more striking. The central question is not simply whether the operation will succeed, but how much of himself Pine can risk or compromise to keep it alive.

Is “overlooked masterpiece” fair?

“Masterpiece” is a judgment, not a measurable status, and the available figures do not prove that the series is overlooked. John le Carré Ltd.’s 2016 series page reports three Golden Globes, two Emmy Awards and three BAFTA awards, and says the show was sold to more than 180 countries. The rights-holder’s 2024 season-two announcement says the first season drew more than 10 million UK viewers and was among 2016’s most-watched television shows. Those are figures reported by the rights-holder; the pages do not establish an independent audit.

The same official page reproduces short review excerpts: The Guardian called it “A stylish and trenchant espionage drama”; Rolling Stone called it “A cloak-and-dagger masterpiece”; and Deadline called it “Near perfect.” They are selected quotations, not a complete measure of critical opinion. A more grounded case for the show is its combination of le Carré’s tradecraft and moral ambiguity, a notable ensemble, and a self-contained first-season story.

How does season two continue the story?

Season two moves beyond the original novel and takes place years after the first-season finale. Pine is now living as Alex Goodwin and running a quiet surveillance unit in London. A former Roper mercenary pulls him into an operation involving Colombian businessman Teddy Dos Santos, businesswoman Roxana Bolaños, arms and a guerrilla army.

David Farr returned as creator and writer; Georgi Banks-Davies directed all six episodes. Hiddleston and Colman return, joined by Diego Calva, Camila Morrone, Noah Jupe, Indira Varma, Paul Chahidi and Hayley Squires among the listed cast. Farr said extending the story was not a step he took lightly: “I did not tread lightly into extending The Night Manager beyond the original book, but an idea came to me a couple of years ago which felt truthful to that unique world of dark corners and shady identities.” He also described working with le Carré on the first season as “an honour and a pleasure.”
