The film is now titled Spider-Man: Brand New Day; Sony says it became available through digital retailers on October 6, 2026.
What Tom Holland said about the draft
Holland discussed the project during an October 2024 appearance on the Rich Roll Podcast. He said he had read the draft about three weeks earlier and that it “lit a fire in him.” He and Zendaya read it together and were excited by what they saw.
His enthusiasm came with an important qualification: “It needs work, but the writers are doing a great job.” In other words, Holland praised the draft’s promise, not a completed screenplay. Gizmodo and GameSpot reported his comments from the interview (Gizmodo; GameSpot).
Why making another Spider-Man film was difficult
He wanted a creative reason to return
Holland said he had reached a point where he could say no after years of working under a studio contract. He wanted to make the best decision for himself and for the character, rather than continue the series simply because another installment was possible. As he put it, “I don’t want to make another movie for the sake of making it.”

The story had to fit Marvel’s schedule
There was also a production-planning challenge: the next Spider-Man film had to fit into Marvel’s interconnected release calendar. Holland described each project as “a small cog in a large machine and that machine has got to keep running.” He said the work was moving quickly and the timing was difficult but achievable. Those comments describe the situation he discussed in 2024, not the film’s present status.

Sony’s official page identifies the fourth film featuring Holland as Spider-Man as Spider-Man: Brand New Day. It lists Destin Daniel Cretton as director and Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers as writers. Sony’s synopsis describes Peter Parker as a full-time Spider-Man in a world that no longer remembers him.

Sony says the film became available through major digital retailers on October 6, 2026. The Associated Press reported in April 2026 that Sony had shown footage at CinemaCon and that the film was scheduled to open in theaters on July 31, 2026; that theatrical date is now in the past.
